Fishing Licences

Afternoon all .... Just trying to figure out fishing licenses on a state by states basis.  Can you pls clarify for me ....

do you need a separate license for each state .... I assume yes?

does the license cover all fishing in that state or do you need additional for local areas? This is how I read things on line, and if i am correct, then everywhere we stop and fish in differences local areas  means a visit to wherever to get the license with my wallet open!

Please tell me i am over thinking this stuff?? Is there one particular website that explains the requirements in plain simple language .... the grey matter required to sort this out, is turning my hair more grey than it already is?!!

thanks for your help ......

None in Qld, but yes in Vic and NSW. Don't know about SA or WA. No amateur lic in NT. Cheaper if you have a gold card or a senior card in NSW or Vic.I hope this helps, Bill.

It is a nightmare when travelling.

In WA you need a license to fish from a boat unless you are with a license holder.  Then you can fish but cannot take more than His quota between you.

If you own the boat then you also need a Recreational Skippers Ticket.

So far you do not need a license to fish from the beach (SO FAR).

You need another license to fish in freshwater rivers / dams etc.

You then need a separate license for all TYPES of fishing IE Net, Abalone, Crayfish, Marron.

Revenue raising?  Nah.

Cheers Neil

ps:  As Bill said, cheaper with Pension / Disability cards.

Here are the web sites of the government agencies that administer recreational fishing around the country. There's doesn't appear to be much commonality beteen jurisdictions so its probably worth while checking before you start fishing. Hope these are some help:

I have a stocked impoundment licence to fish stocked dams such as Peter Fuast dam for Barras, and other fish like bass and yellowbelly in the southern dams. Biggest barra  so far is 117cm. The Money is supposed to go to stocking, but I bet a lot of it goes to generalrevenue. Sorry, forgot about the dams. Bill

Bill If as you say that you do not need a licence in Qld, then I must tell ytou that at Lake Dyer near Laidley and Boondoomba Dam outside of Proston, that I need to have a fishing licence to fish, but not to catch Red Claw.

There is a need for more clarity here.

To fish in most dams in Queensland you need a stocked impoundment permit, Rod

Like me you will end up with a wallet fall of fishing licences ,with not much room left for any money ,after you fork out in each state you travel to and just want to catch a feed of fish. What I have been reading in WA now the state is divided up into parts regarding fishing now, would be interested to know from someone regarding this. ...Think Kalbarri is the line the point of the division.

Don't forget that we own the Murray river to the NSW SA border. If you want to fish in our river you'll need a NSW licence.

(Don't complain, Mexicans, we gave you all that land with all that gold south of the Murray!)

PS: Thanks for the links D & D, I've bookmarked them

Would be all to simple to have a one licence system. If a pensioner in NSW no licenec but if a pensioner from another state hell only knows. If your a returned Vet in NSW no Licence If not entitled to any concessions then buy a short term one to suit your expected period of stay sometimes it works out cheaper to take an annual just incase you return to that state.

I believe you don't require a Fishing Licence in Victoria if you hold a Seniors Card which can be issued by any State.

D&D

Thanks for the links.

From my reading of the Qld   NSW   & Victoria info, anyone with a Centrelink pension card does not need a licence to fish in any of these States.

Now, does that include restricted impoundment dams. It appears so.

Gone are the days of say " a little boy called Smiley" being able to fish.????

The dpi nsw website has a very informative publication that I have downloaded. A great resource for anyone floundering in this topic.  I would think a similar document would be available on a state by state basis To download as it is a 80-odd page doc so a  bit too much to print out. If you have the PDF reader app on iPad, it is easy to download and refer to as needed.

no licence required here in South Australia at least not yet anyway , you also need an inland waters licence in Tassie, we had to get one when we went there a couple of years back, most tackle shops over there will be able to sell you one...
