well for those of you who travel a lot you may no about this but for those who dont travel a lot DONT GET CAUGHT
travelling from adelaide to renmark we where not aware of restrictions re fruit and vegs and got caught big time
we passed the signs and bins but did not dump because the day before i rang the number and she said nothing about quarantine at riverland which is on the way
We where pulled over and yes i told them i had fruit and vegs but i also could show on my phone that i did ring up the day before to ask
i did not keep my reciept which meant i had no proof of where i brought them from but they where in packages
they were very nice but firm and advised us to let others no so they dont get caught
we where very lucky because of my (honesty and attitude) and the phone call i had made they checked out our inside of the van and did not fine us the $315 on the spot fine
so for those of you are traveling be aware because they do do random checks
We have travelled to and from SA to Renmark and Mildura. So we know about the fruit fly Quarrentine. We just wait until we get over the border to buy fruit and veg and only buy enough to last until we come back. We haven't been into other states yet, but we will be checking them out before we go. I guess it pays to only buy enough for short periods, unless you intend not travelling across borders.
You have to be very careful last year we ere travelling to W.A. and wanted to pack some things very securely so rang quarantine and asked if we could take polystyrene boxes through W.A. border the answer was yes as long as they were free from any soil we washed the box out with Dettol and packed the china got to the W.A. border got told no can't bring that box into W.A. so had to unpack put all the china on the bed very carefully drive to the nearest town get another box repack and then on our way. As I say be very careful. Helena.
Not on the big island, but I'll put this in here anyway, in case someone searches quarantine from Melbourne to Tassie in the future.
Travelling on the Spirit - in Melbourne you will be asked if you have fresh fruit - at this stage, you are NOT required to dump it; they can ask you about it, but cannot require you to get rid of it..
Once you land, dumping is required by law. So, only load up what you can eat. Take lots, the food on board is ridiculously exxy!

We have been over the SA border many times and have often seen people eating or cooking their food on the side of the road. If everyone took note of the rules we wouldn't have a fruit fly problem. My biggest frustration would be going to Broken Hill from the east. Lots of signs to say get rid of your fruit but no one check point to check so unless people are honest and do the right thing the fruit can still get taken in. Gerty I'm not sure that receipts would make any difference but I kept mine travelling through the area anyway.
Don't know if it's still operational but the checkpoint between Katherine and Kununurra was very strict. Every time we brought a recovered vehicle back from the NT side it was searched plus our tilt tray truck plus any vans or trailers towed by the broken down vehicle. No point getting smart with the inspecters, they've heard all the excuses and I have seen them really hold people up for however long they feel like if they get a smarty having a go at them. Didn't worry us, we were getting paid by time and mileage anyway.

Honey is another product that you can be caught by. Last I knew, cant take it into WA or across to Tas.
The checkpoints going into WA are very strict. They will almost certainly ask to check in your fridge/s. Will take away any boxes that may have contained fruit at one time.
It is not only checkpoints. We have been pulled over by mobile patrols, along the Murray, that have checked the vehicle and van for fruit and veg.
In SA there is a restriction taking fruit and veg into the Riverland eg Morgan, Waikerie area etc. You can take fruit and veg into this area only if you have receipts for purchases bought in SA. At the border quarantine you can not bring any fruit or veg in to SA.
We were waiting to be checked coming from Mildura to Adelaide on one trip and watched a car travelling towards Mildura stop, go into quarantine office and come out with two pumpkins. Does anyone know if you can buy fruit and veg from these stations when travelling into Victoria?
Surely by now, travellers should be aware of the Quarantine restrictions in all States ? The subject has been covered quite often. It's not as thought they're a new addition to regulations.
Quarantine has been around for years, even Intra-state, let alone Interstate.

My sentiments exactly Sheba, the rule are there to follow, and the signage is all along the roads. It is easy to stop before a checkpoint and either eat up or cook up. Just don't try to evade the system.
We crossed into WA earlier this year, with nothing to declare/hide. We welcomed the officer into our van, and he asked me to open cupboards as random. He did not check the bathroom in our case, nor did he check inside the washing machine, however the van following got the once over, more thoughoughly than ours, even checking inside the toilet bowl.

DUNMOWIN is no longer on the road and still DUNMOWIN!
Do not know if everyone is aware of the quarantine restrictions in place inside side Northern Territory ..when travelling
Movement of plants products into and or out of following zones is regulated.
Ti Tree Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone extends from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs.Do Not Take Fruit including Capsicum/Chilli/ Tomatoes/ Egg Plant/ Cucumber/ Zucchini/ Squash/ into{ FFEZ}This area extends from Tennant Creek to Alice Springs.
Melon Thrips. Melon Thrip host products must not be transported from Darwin Region into to points south of Adelaide River township.Products include Beans/Capsicum/ Chilli/ Cucumber/ Egg Plant MELONS/ Okra/ Pumpkin/ Silver beet Squash/ Tomatoes/ Zucchini.
Mango Seed and Mango Weevil Leaf Hopper. This pest has not been found south of Adelaide River Township,,,YET.
To prevent the spreas Mangos must not be taken anywhere SOUTH of Adelaide River Township.
Those that ignore the quarrantine regs deserve every $$$ of the fine they recieve. In Kununurra we had outbreaks of fruit fly every 2nd year on average causing loss of income, bans and export and interstate restrictions when marketing fruit.
Primary producers are having a hard enough time as it is with excessive 'Nanny State' regulation without losing more markets and incurring higher cost due to inconsiderate travellers. Nearly every infestation was sourced to local caravan parks.

Quarantine restrictions change when the need arises ,even inside states different laws can take place depending on different disease/pest out brake. So even though we all are fairly aware of the everyday restrictions in place ,we all need to refer to the quarantine web site before we enter the next state if be more up to date with the changes that take place from the last time you may have visited that particular state / territory.
You beat me to it Gerty. Just found the booklet, and was going to post the link. The booklet is 20 pages, with Pics. of Insect pests on page 18. Heaps of info.
