Heating for Caravan

We use a little gas heater called " Little Sun" it runs off those Gas Cartridge you buy from Bunnings and camping shops. We running one at the moment and after a couple of hours it's still running with the thermostate set down low. Once the caravan is heated it take very little to keep it warm. Of course, you don't go to bed with it on for obvious reasons.. We bought our heater at Anaconda and they still have them. The gas cartridges are of course cheap as chips.

Hi, am from FNQ and holidaying in Victoria.  Van is 19.6' and has an roof heater which is fine most of the time.  On really cold day need something else as the cold comes up through the floor.  Never use a heater in FNQ and would like any suggestions on what to purchase or to do.  thanks!

G'day EB and welcome to the forum.

I think most who are in your situation would purchase a small fan heater from a department store(not a cheapy shop).

If you are camping away from powered sites your options are very limited.

Hi EB and welcome. When staying in a van park we use a small fan heater. If freecamping we have a diesel heater which works a treat. Costs a bit to have installed but economical to run.

Welcome from us too EB. We also use a fan heater when on power. Heats the van up in no time - usually have to run it on low or turn it off for a while. Maybe a few rugs on the floor would stop some of the cold coming up through the floor too.

We use a $20 fan heater from Crazy Clarks - it does the same job as ones triple that cost and has safety devices built in so that if tipped over or the fan fails the power is cut off. Nice and small to pack away as well.

For cold nights in bed, heat some water on your gas stove and fill an old fashioned hot-water bottle (not with boiling water). Definitely warms and cheers.

Yay! I have a hot water bottle for non-power nights and a wheat pack for power nights. Couldn't use the van in winter without them.

Hi Elaine and a warm welcome to the Nomad forum I believe you have got the best advice on heating but make sure you get a quality unit with safety cutouts.

Hi EB,

I fitted A Truma E2400 Air Heater in 2011 before we left for Tassie as we were staying  there for 15 months and it worked a dream, could not have done without it and still using in SA at the moment. Cost $1550 of the internet, fitted myself and certified also. Maximum gas usage for a average of between 5 to 15 hrs a day in Tassie was 9kg bottle in 12days and that is also all water boil up for cuppas and all cooking on gas. It would have done well over 2000 hrs since fitting in 2011 and uses approx 1.2amp even on start up and running, I have tested amp draw with a clamp meter.

 Cheers Kev.

I saw a on you tube a film some bloke made about living off grid in USA.

He had a very small chip heater (wood) It had an opening door like a mini coonara and a small flue out through the roof.

It was tiny but he claimed it worked very well even in the snow.

Shame a mountain cat killed his kitty too.....

Sigh...

We use a small oil heater bought for $39 at Bunnings. It is electric so can't use it free camping. It gives off the most beautiful warmth and we leave it on all night on low. No noise like a fan heater and doesn't feel stuffy like a fan heater. Haven't free camped in the cold yet but guess it will be hot water bottles and an extra blanket.

I hear diesel heaters are good but a bit expensive. I guess it depends how long you are going to be in a cold area.

briche,

When using your gas heater, please make sure that the area is well ventilated.
