I have been reading the threads on travels and where everyone goes etc, but if you want to go to a place and set up your caravan for a while...but also go and see the sights etc. What do you do?
Les and I love looking at old cemeteries, ruins, museums, etc. so we plan on going to see these and other things when we travel. But we have to park the van somewhere, a central place to stay for a few weeks or months.
So for this type of thing:
Do you use CP?
Do you still use free camps?
Are there places to park the van where you want to see the sights?
I live in a small country town, so there are always plenty of parking for caravaners here. But in towards the city parking is at a premium. We don't plan on going into the cities if we can help it, probably go as far as the suburbs, but mostly stick to the quieter country areas.
I use a CP - most places mean you can do the sights in the afternoon when you arrive then all the next day - so 2 days stops. Otherwise I like to camp - but wont leave the van unless somewhere like Greens Lake - anywhere there are people I know or trust. Still put the lock on the towbar though.

We use caravan parks for this kind of sight-seeing etc. If we want to stay away from the van for a few days and take the tent, we pack it up and store in a caravan park. We've never left our van for more than a couple of hours in a free-camp, and always put the lock on the hitch, even in a C/P.
Thats a whole subject in itself Grams... we just use a strong padlock through the 2 holes which prevent lifting to put it onto the tow-ball....try the search button, for others ideas, theres been some good ones.
If you are exploring the Grampians and surrounds....we live on a farm at the southern end and welcome caravaners to come here and park their van and stay a while and explore the region. You are more than welcome :)
