Tweed Coast Caravan Parks

Spent the wet grey day driving around the Tweed Coast and looked at a couple of caravan parks, namely Fingal Head, Pottsville and Kingscliff and it seems that they all charge around $34-$45 per night for a powered site. I cant believe it!! Do they think it's Noosa or what?

Maybe I need some ideas on free camping in that area

Sorry cannot help you over there but caravan parks are by far to expensive for what they offer

we always free camp and would never consider doing anything else.

Have you tried the Badgers website to get an idea of exactly what is available and an idea of the cost? Here's the link (if it works) http://home.vicnet.net.au/~badger04/welcome.htm . Look for the most recent postings on parks in the area you're looking at and look at the cost. Sometimes it can be worth going a little way away from where you thought you wanted to be.

PS if the link doesn't work let me know and I'll try something different - don't know what yet but I'll think of something.

I have stayed at Pottsville a number of times and enjoyed the stay it is right on the beach and a short walk to the surf.

There is another park at Wooyung a short drive south of Pottsville and it is much cheaper with a special stay 4 nights pay for 3 but it is not a fancy park http://wooyungbeach.com.au/Prices%20to%20June%202013.pdf

Cheers

David

Just arrived home this arvo from Pottsville South. We spent a week there (after a week at Evans Head) - there is a strip of sites right along Mooball Creek with direct waterfrontages (we stayed in one - $259 a week with discount). The 'inside sites' are a bit cheaper, but we wanted to have a waterfront site for a change. A very popular park, park was about 90-95% full the whole week, each morning several vans departed but were replaced by other new ones later each afternoon - only about 4-5 empty sites all week. Easy walking location to the beaches both north and south of the Mooball Creek breakwalls, and easy walk to town for supplies. Great location, thoroughly enjoyed it, we will be back.

Also had a quick survey look at the Pottsville North park while we were there - further back from the beach, less traffic noise, but too far to walk to town for supplies, will have to drive the car. The park is well maintained and the pool area very inviting - they also have a small number of private ensuite sites - however, in spite of the 90% fullness of Pottsville South, this park seemed to be only about 25-30% full during the same period. We reckon it's worth a future visit at some time.

Some weeks back we had a week at Kingscliff Beach - nice site right on the beach and all shops within easy walking distance. Weather was against us - torrential rain for six days out of seven. We were disappointed by the excessive number of 'permanent' vans left unattended, and some with extensive storm damage not repaired for some time. However, this will change as a Tweed Council plan shows that the southern half of the caravan park will be handed over to public space, and the park entrance relocated to the northern end, so the caravans don't have to snake their way through the narrow (now one-way south) traffic calming right in front of the shops.

Kingscliff is very busy at weekends with day trippers and a 'solid wall' of parked cars along the caravan park western boundary. Although the existing caravan park is still open at the moment, I have no idea of how long it will take to redevelop the caravan park and when it is likely to re-open in its new guise, but when it does, I guess there will be heavy competition for the greatly reduced number of 'prime' sites.

Fingal Head and Boyds Bay parks are on our list of future trips, so we can't comment for the moment. Currently, the other two parks in the Tweed Coast group, Kingscliff North and Hastings Point are not on our radar.
