Newbies

Hi,

Just thought I would introduce myself.

As can be deduced from my sign on, the wife and I are from Africa (South Africa). We have been in Australia for 30 plus years and have been caravanning and camping since we arrived. The wife retired about 4 years ago and while I am 59 years old I too am looking forward to retirement and seeing and experiencing this great country.

We have just bought a  new Navara which we intend using for our caravanning well into retirement. Free camping is an area that we are just starting to look into as thus far we have only camped in caravan parks.

I intend slowly hooking the Navara up with all the extras (ie battery pack, CB radio, etc)

We live in the Dandenong area and any advice on free camping close to home would be welcome

Cheers

Hi Afropuf,

And welcome to the best site on the Internet. My husband Les and I plan on moving permanently into the playground (what everyone calls Australia here) in about 18 months. We have everything ready just not the house we plan to sell. Our van is self contained, so has solar panels, batteries, 2 water tanks, toilet and shower, so we plan on free camping as well. We haven't yet done this, so it will be a first for us.

Someone will come in soon to help you, and I hope your adventures are fantastic.

Welcome,a few camping places not that far from where you live Kurth Kiln Picnic and Camping Area maybe a good first time camp for you due to the fact it is only about 65ks from urban Melbourne. This camping spot has no fees and no bookings, but now has a limit on how long you can stay. O ther places are the Yarra Rangers N/Park....Bunyip State Park...Upper Yarra Reservoir Park....

Welcome from us too Afropuf. I'm sure you will enjoy the forum and be well informed on free camping before you try it. Everyone has great advice (well, most of the time - we're not perfect)

Hi Afropuf, welcome from me too, enjoy here and out in the playground.

Just a small word of warning though if I may, beware of wombat holes and don't get too dazzled by them and if you are lucky you might even see a Gypsy hanging around.

If you are really lucky you may also see a few drop bears.....

Welcome from me too, Afro. I have great friends in Safrica, and one in the States, Richie, who loves visiting. If you click on my website below and go to guest travellers you'll see his journals. Meanwhile, nice looking rig you have there, and I'm sure you'll find the GN forum a great source of information as well as entertainment. I wouldn't be without it.

G'day and welcome. I don't know of any free camps close to Dandenong off hand. I know there's an excellent one at Genoa but that's a fair way from you - and of course there's Greens Lake but that's not really practical for a weekend for you. But I'm sure you'll find some. If you haven't got it already please buy yourself a Camps7 book - it will tell you all about what's available in your area.

Have fun!

Afropuf - welcome to the site - as Glassies and nomadic1 say - do you have the Camps Australia Wide no. 7 book - there are some spots not too far from you - Bass Valley Campground - near Beena - no. 95 in Camps 7 - is one a member on here stayed at recently - Yeoeleven - posted about it with photos - just put Yeoeleven in the search engine on this site - and look for his post re the place. There is also a Budget and Free camp spots area on this forum - read through there - good information.

The Camps book is invaluable - called the "bible" by some!!! Wouldn't travel without it!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the great response on free camping.

I do have Camps 4 book which is quite good. I have also hit the Internet on free camping with lots of places throughout Victoria. I will most certainly look up the spots recommended.

The response has been terrific so once again thanks
