I have been trying unsuccessfully for a few days to upload an avatar on here. I run Windows 8, and it simply refused to let me do it. So, I logged in using the old desktop...and bingo! Worked a treat. I wonder why this is?......
I to have windows 8 and it is a very touchy operating system and takes abit of getting used to, I migrated from XP which helped me learn as I didn't go with Vista etc.
Yeah.....I agree with both comments. I like the tiles on the Win eight screen...but I DONT like how it is so touchy. The old Desktop was cluttered, but everything you needed was on the screen, as in controls etc. I find myself using the old system more and more. Especially for listening to you tube stuff. I like having the volume control always visible, rather the hovering over the right bottom corner in the hope the controls will appear.
Sounds like we'll stay with Windows 7. Son told us not to go with Vista when we had XP. So maybe We'll stick with Windows 7 until the bugs are ironed out of 8.
Why change to W8, W7 will be around for many years, support for XP is only finishing next year, let others sort out the bugs and have the agro that a new operating system brings with it, all you are doing is making Bill Gates even richer. Cheers David
When I up-dated my computor, i was going to go Windows 8 BUT ?? our resident Poota Guru ? Wombat advised against it, so I stuck with 7 and from the complaints i here about 8 ? Thanks Womby
Also Dougwe told me ?? that windows 7 Is a Male ?? ie Steady and reliable ! and windows 8 is a Female. ?? ie wild, unruley, and complicated ?? I was a little shocked at this and asked him How do you know that Dougwe ??? and he said that Bohemian Gypsy told him and she know a lot about poota's ??
PS !! Shhhhh !! this is wombat, I have hacked into dazrens computor ? but don't tell him ok

Sorry, but I find the comparison offensive Cindy. I wouldn't use either.
No you don't have to change to another system, but updates will be no longer available and it all depends how you use your computer, recently I had to start using Chrome because a website that I was using would no longer render correctly with Internet Explorer 8 and you cannot update to a later version of IE when using XP, eventually I will have to migrate to W7, which is really not a problem as I already use W7 on other computers and in many ways some actions are much easier on W7 and this system will be around for many years to come.
Also some new programs won't run under XP so it really comes down how you use your computer, I find that Government web sites give the most trouble as when they upgrade they don't support older systems.
The laptop suddenly turned itself off. No reason that I know of, battery was fully charged, and was plugged into power. It went black and was completely turned off. I waited till this morning to reopen it. Worked straight away. Never had that happen before.
Sounds like a power issue. I wouldn't worry too much unless it happens again.
Without updates, you might leave yourself vulnerable using XP, and maybe only if there are enough users to make it worth targetting. The hardest thing is that hardware and software move on and older hardware might not run the newer software. There are alternatives in Linux, and maybe the new Chrome Operating System.
Windows 8 is proving to be a 'double-edged sword' for many IT users.
IMHO, there is a difference between being on the 'front edge' of technology and being on the 'cutting/bleeding edge' of technology.
Microsoft (Windows), as with lots of other major software companies, have often used the paying user for bleeding edge (post-beta test) trials....that is, you pay for the software, if it doesn't work properly you send details back to M/S (either by default or by actual submission) and they 'consider' fixes for later versions.
This methodology is, basically, denoted by a NEW integer/name (95/98/NT/2000/XP/7....now 8) and the first 'few' versions of each have been/are notoriously error-prone.
So, there are new features, for sure, but caveat emptor.

As someone else posted on here ,wait and let all the bugs get sorted, before even thinking about upgrading ,Why do the bug issues for Bill Gates and not be on the pay roll.
