I've notice the boxes black and clear, but never knew what they meant. But if they are black because I have read them, then it's black on the forums I haven't even gone into...so you are probably not the only one with this problem.

As far as I can see it's automatic on my screen,,, when you read something the box turns black and changes when another post is added.

If it's black you don't need to read it again because it has no more posts since you read it last time.

Am I right????

Yes you are right Baz, BUT if there arer some threads you are not going to read you can click on Mark all as read. That is supposed to make the ones you haven't read black as well as the ones you have read.

As to the problem of them going back by themselves there might be a glitch as the last few day when I have read a PM and replied, next time I go back into the forum it reads as another PM has arrived but when I go into it there is only the one I have read and replied to.

I would suggest you have a problem with 'cookies'
Have you recently installed a program that cleans up your computer, Crap Cleaner for instance.
If so, you will find it is deleting the cookies.
All websites need cookies to remember you, many sites of course you don't want to remember you so cleaning them off is good.
However if you want a site to remember what you have set things to, you have to leave the cookies for that site.

If you have installed a cleaner type program, check the settings/options you should find you can keep cookies you want.

Cheers,

But what happens when you have never been into one of the posts or threads, for me they are always black.

Every now and then I have strange things happen - the site "freezes" - can't move forward or backward, up or down - then it will all just come right again by itself. And the black boxes happen automatically for me.

Yes at times I can't log off or website freezes.

Also I keep getting a survey which my anti virus says is either code red or orange (McAfee paid version) and it keeps switching me to their survey in a new screen or over rides GN site.

Has the website been hacked???

Confident it's not my browser,,, it only happens on GN website.

If it was browser it should appear everywhere.

I'll try fire fox later to see if is the same

El Gringo thanks for tips,,

Just ran Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - found no bugs.

Virus scan likewiase.

On another thread we were reporting differing screen views with ticks in boxes next to threads, one persons computer behaves different to another (not an objective result I admit)

Any other suggestions - I'll troopy's suggestion next.

I would not suggest 'hijack this' if you are a novice, not easy to figure out and you could easily do more harm than good.

Try this...
http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp/?gclid=CLXJmp79iLcCFUpgpQodo3wAIQ

Just download the free version and run the program, should show whatever ails your PC.

Spybot search and destroy is also good.

see how you go...

Cheers,

Ahhhh just tracked it down. Before it changed screens "deal spy" flashed up for 1/2 second.

It had installed itself as a valid software somehow so not picked up in scans.

Must have come with Bearshare music download without any option to block.

Thanks for input Gringo and Troopy

Thanks I reported this to McAfee and asked why it installed itself without being found by their malware software. Will keep you posted.
