The Big Desicion!

I am thinking  serously of selling the house I have on Magnetic island, Qld, and my small charter fishing business, and taking early retirement on the road. The full time Grey nomad life is calling me. As I have saleable skills and reasonable heath, I don,t think it will be hard to get work , if I want it,But iti s a big desicion.I have lived here for 35 years, and run my business for 23 of them. And to those who reckon living on a tropical island is paradise, come and buy the house and boat. Everywhere gets boring, Eventually. I would apreciate your views. Bill

Good on you Bill - it is a great life, and as you say - you will get work if you need to - good luck with the sale of the house and the business - know we are all just waiting for you to be out there!!!

Hopefully some one will decide that life on Magnetic Island will be great & you will be able to sell up. There's nothing wrong with Magnetic Island, it's just that you need a change I think. So life out 'on the road' will certainly give you that. Best of luck however you decide. Alice

RE: The Big Descision!

You have to do what is best for you Bill, you have been thinking of this for some time so maybe you have reached the stage where it's crunch time.

Being on the road will give you a chance to look at the rest of Oz and give you a new lease of life, and just maybe you may eventually see the place where you can settle later when and if you are ready.

If you feel your house and business is getting more and more like a stone around your neck maybe it is time to move on.

Good luck with whatever you wish to do. smile

PS:  If I was solo I would be doing the same thing, always been a rolling stone type...

We're facing a similar dilemma too Bill.

We are waiting for the property values to increase a bit more before we offload this place then we're off
to see Aus and pick up part time work when needed. All before we get too old.

We plan to buy a much smaller place and let it out to help with expenses.

Cheers

Thanks for all the good advice. I think much the same way. I want to travel before I get infirm, and as the govt won't give me an early pension, selling assets is the only way. Now all I have to do is paint and clean the house, etc, then advertise it. With the proceeds, and some other super, I should be able to do just that. As some of my reprobate mates from the Ulysees club say "grow old disgracefully" . Bill

I was chatting cyberly to a shrink mate, discussing decision making. We figure decision making falls into four categories: 1) Refusing to make a decision. 2) Deciding to make a decision. 3) Making a decision. 4) Leaving it too late to make a decision.

All I can say, Bill, is don't leave it till the forth.

And BTW, my mate hasn't turned up yet to help me load the camper. Grrrr.

G'day

I'm with the rest Bill what ever your decision it's not going to happen over night, so you have plenty of time to think about your decision and consult with family.

Believe me mate if I had the Kanga I would be tempted to buy you out but then again I'm just getting into this GN thing and so far I think it is the WAY2GO.

cheers

Kev

We are in the same boat Bill. We so want to go, but we have to wait until our youngest finishes Yr12, then we are gone. Les is dying to give up work, and I'd love him too, but until we sell the house we can't.

We have been tossing over selling the house now, paying off our debts (the caravan) and living in the van at our daughters place until our youngest finishes school, which she can do from there. It's just we have to also paint the whole house and retile the main bathroom. It's looks like I get to do all those jobs, while Les works up north.

Its hard, very hard.

Too complicated, and wouldn,t make enough money.I had leased my business before. and all they did was destroy the gear. No. a straight sale is the way to go. All I have to do is sellit. Bill

Yep, go for it Bill. As you say, you're in good health and you can turn your hand to anything. You wouldn't have any problem making some pocket money, or should I say, fishermans money, along the way. biggrin

Hi Bill, i am sure you will do what is best for you.It is probably one of the biggerest decisions you will have to make in your life,as it is not just selling your house ,but your buiness as well. But there become's a time in one's life where change is for the better. I was in the same position as you find yourself in. In the end i thought what have i got to loose if it goes pear shape. But i did not want to be thinking when i am in a old folks home WHAT IF !!!! It took about 12 months to get organised from the day i made the final desision to the day we drove towards N/T.Had no real plans ,just needed to clear my head and shake the hectic work scedual out of my system. But all has worked out for the best ,I contract out to mining /oil/gas companies in OH&S and Enviromental issues ( the same kind of work i was doing before i took to the road ) but now i do not work for the company as a emplyer, now i contract to them ,so i work only part of one year. And have the other half off to go do my own thing. You would not have any problem finding work along the WA coast , as the local fishing/ tourist/ charter businesses are always advertising for staff. There is so much work out there it is unbelievable. And if you have skills as you have you would have the whole coast line around Oz to choose from. As someone said to me YOU WILL NEVER EVER KNOW IF YOU NEVER EVER GIVE IT A GO.I  have met a lot of people Bill in my traveles have met a lot of grey nomads travelling this big country and almost everyone of them in some way or another has mentioned that they wish they had not left so late in their life to hit the road. As they are past the stage in their life to work or climb a mountain .

I wish you all the best in what ever you do.

Regards Herbie

Funny how you picture living on Magnetic Island doing Fishing Charters as paradise,  my Brother lives in Vanuatu. He can't even buy his underpants over there or the things we take for granted.  Anyhow good luck with your decision Bill.

Magnetic island is a lovely spot , but does have a few draw backs , like being an expensive place to live. Everything is 20% more expensive, and the transport costs to the mainland don,t help .I do get bored with it now and again. Its about time to get on the road. Thanks for the help. Bill
