Health is your real wealth.....without it wealth means nothing..the late Kerry Packer is an example...
As an aside, do others feel as irritated as I do, without showing it of course, apart from avoiding them, when someone introduces themself as a 'Self Funded Retiree'..usually accompanied with a Dick Emery,Village Vicar smarmy Ipana smile of satisfaction/superiority........?? almost as a challenge for you to respond with your similar greeting/tag or....Gee I'm a' Government Dependant,' I think I'm happy/priviledged to meet you......
What possible purpose apart from your Accountant/ Bank Manager/ Taxation Dept, can it serve except possibly alienating and ceratinly irritating those that have to suffer listening to the term....
Average Australians have never really been class conscious however is this term intended to create some label that actually means something?.....
There are a few jingoistic terms that also irritate, 'absolutely'..why not definitely?......AFL commentators stating there are still say 15 'Home and Away Games' to play...surely it would only be news if there were 15 straight 'Home' games to play or 15 straight 'Away' games.....but 15' Home and Away' makes as much sense to this little black Duck as 'Self Funded Retiree'.....
Thats my Epistle from the Mount this morning, and I feel so much better having got that little lot off my chest.....or am I being irritating...Lol...Hoo Roo

If jingoistic terms like absolutely, self-funded, home and away, etc, annoy you, you're probably paying too much attention to them. Water off a duck's back if yaaas me. However, one bloke used to get up my hooter - the local ABC announcer who followed his time calls with "right now" hehe. And I don't mean now and then, but ALL the time. So I emailed him and he stopped. I worked with an announcer in Sydney who followed his time calls with "...ish" which I found much more to my liking. That said, quite frankly, and to be absolutely crystal clear, may I say at the end of the day, it's great to be an Aussie.

In my opinion it is great to meet or hear of Self-Funded Retires and I dont care if they come across a little stuffy or conceited,
especially if they are fully self-funded. Because, I know that my tax paying children and grandchildren are not contributing to fewer pension.

Sometimes I think we all forget where the government gets the money to pay for social security and the infrastructure that we are forever demanding more of.

It can only come from taxpayers.

Minimising tax is everyones obligation in providing for family and employees, whereas tax avoidance is a crime practiced by scum who are effectively stealing
from all Australians. If they dont pay, everyone else has to pay more.  Remember Kerry Packer said he did not want to pay extra because he did not think the government was not very good managing money.

Unfortunately, a large percentage of retires are not able to accumulate the funds and/or assets to self-fund their retirement and the community has a duty of care
via the government pension/welfare system to see that these people live a comfortable dignified life.

In Summary, for the Community;
Self-funded retires are good
Tax minimisation of tax is everyones obligation
Tax avoiders are thieves
We should all be prepared to look after each other.

These are my thoughts; please do not abuse me if yours are different, but without abuse I will listen.

Rather than face a real barrage..I now humbly retreat.

Greg,

No apology necessary.  I just made a very very poor attempt to match your wit.

Whew! You had me worried there for a mo, Retreat. Thanks for the msg. I have this thing about not using emoticons. I'm a fan of Jack Benny who never smiled when he cracked a funny. He always gave the impression he never understood what the audience was laughing at. Hehe. That really used to crack me up. BTW, who's Greg?

I don't know who Greg is.   Ask my crazy auto spell checker that often gets confused by my thick fingers.

Sorry Gary

All this self funded.v goverment pension debate is a little like i'm better than you kind of thing. All crap if you aske me we all are on this earth for only a very short time, so just be happy inwhat you have been blesed with.A lot of people are rolling in money and are as misserable as a dog with out a good master. And the most nicest happiest people i know have very little and would give you their last bob if you needed it more than them.I always say ..the man who has the least ,at the end of the day he will be the one to survive ,as he has not much to loose, but the one who has all the bells and whistles would not be able to servive it was all taken away from him. That's why they money spend it and enjoy it,but spend it in the way you want, not be made to spend it to a business you may not need in this journey we all are on.

Funded either way it's money that stays in the country.

Australia redistributes more to the poorest fifth of the population than virtually any other OECD country.

Sleep easy that GN activities play a significant part in the distribution of the dollar throughout the dusty corners of our country.

It is counterproductive to the best interests of older people to foster any resentment based on source of income.

Anyhow, if anyone ever mentions self-funded status it would usually be intended to excuse their ignorance of, or lack of opinion on, the subject under discussion. We all feel obliged to say why we are not up on some subjects.

In some quarters it is already a 'no-no' to talk about brands of van and cars for fear someone will be offended. Practically everything else risks treading inadvertently on tender sensibilities, courtesy of the very prevalent and all-encompassing political correctness we now endure in Oz. If the daily media reporting is any guide there is no limit to being offended, despite the apparent innocuousness, innocence, humour or triviality of what is said -or thought, which is scary! The Bolt case demonstrated the last mentioned (they tell you what you must have been thinking at the time!).

I've never had anyone announce to me that they're a self funded retiree. My sister and b-i-l are SFR, but they don't go around telling people. They just say we're retired.

Anyway, I agree with Goldy, your health is your wealth.
