I thought this was posted some where on this forum regarding the closure, due to someone complaining about them not being able to stay there longer than six weeks. Or was it some other show grounds?? The problem with these type of people who complain and end up getting these type of places closed , just go to the next show grounds close by ,and complain there over what ever and before long they end up closing that one also. And before long we will be wondering why there is no more show grounds to park up.

Gday...
I think ya half right Herbie ... I asked some months ago if anyone knew if the Redcliffe Showgrounds was still available for camping. Advice from forumites was initially inconclusive but eventually a "local" on Redcliffe Peninsula (GN Member) advised they were fairly sure Council had decided to stop camping there.
Regarding "someone complaining about them not being able to stay there longer than six weeks" I think ya got the bull by the proverbials mate. No one, to my knowledge, has complained about this showground - or the closure by Council. There has only been an exchange of advice regarding its availbility.
The remainder of your post is rendered a bit misinformed given that no-one was, or IS, complaining and, as you can see by my info in response to a query on this post, I simply "made other arrangements".
Guess it's easy to get the gist of threads a bit c o c k eyed.
Cheers - and happy camping
Cheers - John

File this under (now) useless information ... I drove past the Redcliffe Showgrounds yesterday and there were about 30 vans set up in there ... some had been there a while, obviously by the grass growing underneath, and some looked like 'travellers' who had not been there for long.
I had been planning to stay at the Redcliffe Showgrounds during April and May and the advice I had received from various forums etc was that the Moreton Bay Council had "closed" the showgrounds for camping. I became aware of the phone number for the caretaker but did not think to ring ahead and book - coz I don't book ahead as I never know exactly when I will be in an area and definitely do not know in advance exactly the day I would arrive. Even if I did choose to nominate an 'arrival date' I would probably have to move it. I am just too slack to plan my movements that precisely.
Anyway, I went into the showgrounds and had a talk with the caretaker. The advice was confirmed that Council has 'closed' the showgrounds for camping. However, the 30-odd vans there had ALL pre-booked and therefore the Council was "honouring" their booking but all had to be gone by 30 May 2013 - dreaded date of effect for full closure.
When I pressed the caretaker that if I had pre-booked, let's say three weeks ago, then I could have stayed there ... the response "NO" - the pre-booking had to have been made BEFORE the Council decision was announced.
Apparently, those there had booked many months ago for April/May 2013 ... some of them come EVERY year and had a 12monthly booking in advance each year. Don't ya jest luv dedication They will need to have alternative plans for next year now
Anyway, for what all these wasted words are worth, forget the Redcliffe Showgrounds for camping - it ain't approved no more
Cheers - John

Can fully recommend it - $29/night or $145/week ($20.71/night).
Clean, space between vans, can take large rigs, 5th wheelers and buses, some permanents but they are clean and nice folk. Amenities good incl dump point. Right on the southern foreshore of the Peninsula.

I'm like you, John... never know from one day to the next what my plans are. And even if I did, I'm a newbie so I wouldn't know what I was booking into anyway.

Gary don't worry your self over being a nuwbie, us oldies never know some times either what we are heading into...Some times it is pot luck. But if it ain't what the advertising said i was just put it into the little black book never to return and word of mouth is also good PA for some places ...good or other wise.
I passed Bells Caravan Park Clontarf in the bus about 30 minutes ago and remarked to myself how good it is looking compared to how it was 12 years ago when we spent about 4 months there. It looks quite good now but was, alas a dump when we stayed there.

If there is such a thing as a tourist season.... why cant we shoot them?
We are staying at Kalbar Showgrounds at the moment - in The Scenic Rim of SE QLD - large area, with modern amenities, plus an old amenities block - now with a DUMP POINT (CMCA) - for power and water we are paying $90 a week for two people. The nightly cost is $18 for two people with power and water - $13 no power. (I have posted this info in the Free/Budget camps area on the site).
Have stayed in a lot of showgrounds over the years, and this is a good one compared to some. The Hobart(Tas) showgrounds at Glenorchy are a bit sad really, for $25 a night -they say they are going to update them - and move them to the other side of the showgrounds - where there won't be as much room, though much more level sites, an hopefully better electrical connections, some of the ones at the moment are a bit dicey!
The showgrounds in Boonah 9k from Kalbar are $25 per night, with power and water (not sure of the weekly rate) - and there are a lot of permanents there. The amenities are not too bad, and clean. They are within walking distance to the town which has good shopping.
Find the ones that are run more like "caravan parks" are usually more expensive, with marginally better amenities, though not always.
Would never complain about them, they are usually a bit less "formal" than caravan parks.
As RL (John) says - happy camping!!
