Stone Chips.

I always have some of this handy.  It works, and is the same as the repairer I called used, the first time I had the problem.   If I remember rightly, he charged me $70.00.    At $19.90 a tube, it's a lot cheaper than getting some-one else to do it.

Glass and Windshield Fix, from Magnamail Mail Order.

Sounds good Sheba, that Magnamail has some good stuff on it, we've bought a bit of stuff off them over the years.

Among other things, I bought a pair of gloves which are made of something like the material surfers/divers wet suits have (probably the same stuff) for arthritis in my hands, your fingers stick out the ends of them.. They make a terrific difference especially when driving......

The Glass and Windshield Fix is excellent for small Stone Chips.   I've used it myself on several occasions, on different vehicles.

Wouldn't be any use on a big one though.  Very easy to use, and saves a lot of time and unnecessary expense.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Mine are permanently in the glove-box Vic.  Haven't used them yet though.

Cheers,

Sheba.

If you do get a stone chip - the first thing to do is to wipe it with a clean dry cloth - do not touch it with your fingers - oil will get in the chip - anyway O'Briens, if you use them, will usually give you some little stickers to put on straight away to keep dust out. You can use clear sticky tape as well - most repairers like it if you do something like this.

Wow, I paid $120 for a whole new windscreen fitted to my last ute... an XG Falcon.

Over the last 15 years or so, I've only had cars with full leather-bound steering wheels, but prior to that all my earlier cars only had shiny (slippery) plastic steering wheels.

What I used to do was go to a bicycle shop and get a pair of bike racers fingerless mittens - these have a soft leather lightly padded palm, and mesh backs (for cool air flow over the backs of your hands) the mitten stopped just before the second finger joints, so you still had unrestricted finger movement. A velcro strap over the back of the wrist stopped them from falling off. It takes a few days use to get a bit of skin oil worked into the leather, but when you do, the plastic steering wheel never slipped out of my grip. I'd store them in the drivers door pocket or the centre console when not using them.

If you have problems with sweaty palms on slippy plastic steering wheels, give this a try - worked for me in over 40 years of driving, but now I only buy cars with full leather-bound steering wheels.

Not being sure what to do or the best way to go about it, decided to ring my insurance company RACV.
It couldn't have been easier. She put through the claim, took no more than ten minutes to answer all the question and get all the details.
She even txt to my mobile my claim number and details of the company and phone number, O'Briens, and said they would ring me to arrange for the replacement of the windscreen.
I don't have to do anything more, don't lose my excess and don't lose my rating 1 for life.

Very happy with the service from RACV.

MagnaMail stuff can usually be bought on Ebay for a fraction of the price, sometimes with free shipping:

What really annoys me are their "handling charges". Since when can a product be bought and sold without being handled? Imagine being charged a handling fee for each item that passes through a supermarket checkout.

BTW, my recent MagnaMail catalogue claims that there is a $250 prize reserved for someone with my initials. It's times like these that I wish my name was something like Xavier Quigley. Actually I Googled the name and he does exist.
