The "Gooney" or "Gooney Bird" was a World War Two nickname for the Douglas Dakota, aka DC3 in its civilian version.
Given some of the feats accomplished by those aircraft, especially during the war, the nickname was not altogether inappropriate for the reasons you cover in your post.

I think we have been miffed.. shes only does 3152 nm , not as far as first thought.. so will have to make up my mind to keep it or sell it.. till we find another plane..
any plane experts around with a knowledge of long distance mid sized jets,similar to this but can fly 5-6000 nm or more??
