Frank Lupino Memorial Park - Western Australia

I did try to find it once but missed it somehow, didn't have my GPS with me....

I couldn't find any reviews on it either, only this comment;

South Western Highway

Whitby WA 6123

Driving Directions

On western side of South Western Highway, just north of the Kiernan Street junction.

Frank Lupino Memorial Park is a free overnight rest area consisting of a large tract of forested land beside the highway. There is a side slip road which together with the highway forms an island which is the park.

There is no time limit here but there are no amenities. The park is directly east of Mundijong.

The only other free camp in that general area I can think of is on the grassed area in Pinjarra outside the Railway Station (24 hour toilet open).

If you want a paid place, Pinjarra Country Caravan Park, Camp Wattle Grove (aka The Kenwick Centre) or the 7 Day Adventist caravan park near High Wycombe, both of these are close to the airport (no dogs allowed though).

I don't suppose the caravan park we are using for out Get Together is any good for you at Beverely, $10 a week for one person no power but fully equipped campers kitchen, good ablutions, open areas etc.....See GTG thread.....

Have a look in the camps book for the free camp at Bannister, a big level open area there from memory on the South West Highway.

CathyG lives in that general area and does a lot of free camps, she may have some idea so send her a pm.....

I see Delta 18 is online at the moment, he might know too!

Can't find CathG on the forum list

 Wil;l ring Ravbenswood C/P tomorrow, but they don't have a web site for me to check prices over the phone,  Herron Point too far from Perth.

Still looking for info about Frank Lupino memorial Park if anyone knows

Has anyone stayed at the Frank Lupino Memorial Park (CAW7 WA 194).  It is a picnic area 16kms of Armadale or 42 km N or Pinjarra on the South Western Highway.  Is is off the road, heavily treed (we need the solar), suitable for a 7 day stay?  Quiet? Safe? Frequented by other GNs?

Looking for a free camp on southern side of Perth for Mr D & van while I return from Perth to Brissy for a week.

Sorry, that should have been Jayco Gypsy for CathyG, I will contact her and ask her to view this thread.....

(Done, shift worker so may not respond immediately).

Pinjarra Country Caravan Park would also be good, about 5 kms east of Pinjarra on the road to Dwellingup

http://turu.com.au/parks/wa/peel/pinjarrah-park-country-camping.aspx

(please note this is not Pinjarra Caravan Park on the road between Pinjarra and Mandurah, although another option with unpowered sites too.  That is this one;  http://www.pinjarracaravanpark.com.au/3.html

Thanks Duh, I was going to send you a PM, seeing that you are from Perth.   The info you have reproduced below I also found this morning, was hoping some GNs had been there recently with reviews.  Beverly (for us) is in the wrong direction - but at $10 per night for solo would have been an acceptable option.  Just want somewhere preferably free and safe where Mr D can sit out my visit, not too far from Perth.  Were looking at Old township site in Marrinup (near Dwellingup), but found this one this morning.

As we will be travelling up from Esperance, then when we leave, heading down to Denmark, don't want to go too far north or north west of Perth.  Also, as my flights are depart Perth around midnight, and arrive back about same time, don't want too long a drive back to the van.

Hi All

I haven't been to Frank Lupino Park. I have driven that stretch of hwy quite often & can't recall seeing it.
The only recent reference I have to it is a Geocaching site. With some comments. Can pm you the link.

I don't think you will find anything close to Perth in free camps. Marrinup now charges, Adults $7/night; Concession card holders $5/night; Children $2/night.

Martins Tank is closed for Maintenance. This link will give you all the DEC camp grounds.

If I think of any else will let you know.

Bonney's Water Ski Park offers caravan & camping. Might be worth a look.

Hopefully the links will work, if not Vic can you make them work please.

 thanks JG.  I have earmarked the Marrinup site.  I rang them the other day, and was told they no longer charge, which is a bonus.  Also tried to book for Lane Pools, but all the caravan sites suitable for our van were booked out.   Beginning to think that with the distance from free camp to airport x 4, we might as well go to a furiousCARAVAN PARK furious, and pay for an unpowered site.  Currently looking at Advent Park and Camp Wattle Grove for their pricing.  Both are not far from the aiport

Vic's comment:  Heard it is very noisy.....

 Links made clickable for Jayco Gypsy as requested.   I have stayed at both Advent Park http://adventpark.adventist.org.au/  and Camp Wattle Grove http://www.campwattlegrove.com.au/cwg-accommodation.htm , they have a no drinking /smoking policy but if it is done inside your vans it is tolerated just don't mention it (I did ask and that is the answer I got).

DM, don't know if you have dogs, but I don't think either allow pets.....

Banksia Caravan Park near the SDA one does allow dogs on leads, also a nice park. Edit:  Wow just looked at their prices, pretty hefty...http://www.banksiatourist.com.au/contents/tariffs-bookings.php  I think it is Top Tourist so may get some discount, still not cheap though...

If you stay at Camp Wattle Grove, ablution block near the swimming pool is best.   Almost opposite it is a caravan park called Crystal Brook, I would give that a miss, have never stayed there but have not had good feedback from those who have stayed there.  That's where the police found the murderer of Daniel Morcombe was staying (so were the police who were keeping an eye on him under cover).

Dwellingup Caravan Park is nice too, in a bush setting.  See stay 6 nights and get 7th night free;

http://www.dwellingupcaravanpark.com.au/app/webroot/js/tiny_mce/plugins/filemanager/files/2013_tarriff_updated_30-4-13.pdf

 Central Caravan Park is very close to the airport (the closest) but is not the cheapest, Top Tourist so discounts apply for members;

Golden Ponds Caravan Park, powered and unpowered;

This is a very nice spot with powered and unpowered sites for caravans etc and a nice campers kitchen and ablution block.

You will need to give them a ring to check the prices though.

Mundijong Road intersects with the Highway around where the Frank Lupino Park is and the caravan park is not far down Mundijong Road on the left.

See this link for details, I have stayed there in the caravan park section and it was great....

See;  http://www.goldenponds.com.au/accommodation/

Called into this park yesterday and spoke to a couple who hailed from the Gympie area, they have a very large bus with at trailer on the back with a small 4WD vehicle on it.   They had solar on the roof and were living in the bus full time.   It is not a visible park as such, more like a tract of bushland with a bitumen ring road, use your GPS otherwise you will miss it.

There were quite a number of campers there in tents (no time limit), no facilities, a 5th Wheeler and several caravans and a couple of campervans.   It is not far from Byford and you can hear the traffic nearby on the highway, but not too bad.   There are spots where you can get enough sun for solar.   It would be good for an overnight stop (I didn't stay there as I was only about 40 kms from home) but to be honest I don't think I would want to spend longer than that there unless I was self contained etc.   TV reception was good as I could see the TV going in the bus which had a dish mounted on the roof.

Unless you knew this camp was there (not visible from the main road) you would drive right past it.  There are rest stop signs though on the side of the South West Highway showing it is a rest stop.
