Alice Springs

If anyone is heading to Alice springs a grate place to base yourself is at the  National Transport hall Of Fame. For $20pre week (to help towards the $6000 per month power bill ) and 25hrs of volunteer( couple ) work per week .We thought we would stay a week we enjoyed it that much we stayed 5 weeks. There is an area out the back of museum to park your rig water / power and very safe. If you have not got your own bathroom , there is showers and toilets on site. The work is really enjoyable and very relaxed not hard yakka just work at your own pace and your own time scedual. Some of the jobs are just handyman jobs, for the women it may involve reception/gift/ souvenir shop or in the coffee shop. Some times you might even get the chance to drive some of the beaut old vihicles from one area to another inside the sheds. We had the one of the best times in all our travells doing this.We had plenty of time to also go off and explore what Alice and the surounding area has to offer. This National trasure dosn't get any goverment funding as such so it is mainly run with volunteers. Also the Old Ghuan Train Museum is incorperated into the complex.

We went for a few weeks a couple of years ago and stayed 8. I finished up making Anzac biscuits and scones. Had a great time. We were there for the Alice show, the Camel races and the Beanie festival, A great place,

What a great idea, Herbie. Sounds like a lotta fun as well as very interesting. Ya got me.

i cannot understand why more organizations through out the country do not at least give this type of setup that Alice has going for it,  at least give it a try to see if it works for them. It is a win for every one .They have set the bench mark up there and proved it works.

We are heading that way at present. I had already checked it out on the Internet and was under the impression that you had to commit for a minimum of one month. Is this so or can you do one to two weeks. We are very interestesometime ding some time around Alice.

They will welcome you with open arms from one week to how ever long you want to stay. You do not have to commit to any definate time frame ,The only stipulation is you give back 20/25 hrs to the museum per week. If you want to cut your hrs out over say a few days that is fine or maybe you may want to cut it out over a couple of days and have the rest of week to go off doing your own thing. And then the following week you start your  hrs again for  that week.Just a grate way to stay in Alice for awhile and enjoy what it has to offer .Also a really good way of net working ,as so many people there to offer good advice regarding what to do/ not to do, where to go . The day we were leaving they put on this lavish morning tea and bid us farwell...Forgot to mention the hrs can be cut out between your self and partner , it is not each person has to do the hrs.So in reality you could cut your hers out in a couple of days, but we just loved being there and the hrs never bothered us .It is not like working for a living with big brother looking over your shoulder,No time clock here mate to punch in , just enjoy it all.

My son and dauterinlaw are based out in Longreach , i asked him about camping at Hall Of Fame if you voluntering and he said he never sees more than one or two vans parked up at one time ,he said he did not know if they even had any thing to do with volunteering at it.I also read on another forum that for the price of any thing to get into in Longreach is a little on the dear side.I do not know regarding this as i have not been to any of the museums out , although have been out there to visit son a few times.
