Something i got of Ebay for reading & erasing fault codes & check engine lamp. Its an interface from the OBD11 conector on all vehicles produced after 2005 to a laptop. It also shows instantaneous engine parameters. All this for $10 to$15 free postage, so it shouldnt break the bank. Ive used it sofar on BA falcons & the latest 2013 Ford Ranger CRD. There is avalable a bluetooth model for around the same price.

Hey DeBe, it looks like it's not communicating with you I/O port (Port Status Com 6 could not be opened) did you get any meaningful readings from it?

Those are only pictures i took of the program not operating. It does work as ive used it on Ba falcons & a current model Ranger. Will try taking pictures when i next use it on a vehicle. I dont own any late model vehicles. I just ocasionaly get asked to work on them as pensioners usualy cant aford to pay the high price that dealers ask to diagnose faults.

 Sounds like a handy gadget to have.   Bear in mind that in WA at least, the RAC do a free 30 minute diagnostic check for RAC members pensioners or otherwise.   They also reset mine for me free.

I bought an Actron Auto Scanner from supercheap for $129.00 that does much the same as DeBe's unit. These are distributed by Bosch in Aus along with all the pro gear as well. I am happy with what it does and should be a reliable bit of gear for Just in case.

How do you connect these readers (to what etc) or are they held by hand only, ignition on or off etc, in other words how do you use them please confuse

Pretty mutch every vehicle after 2000 has an OBD11 conector, but not all are compliant untill after 2005 when they all should be. The conector must be positioned with in reach of the drivers position, usualy by the fuse conectors or close by on the drivers side. The shape of the conector is in the picture. To read fault codes & erase you plug the device in & switch ign on KOEO (key on eng off). Read the codes & write them down, then work out what requires fixing, then get it fixed, then same procedure & erase codes. This particular reader also does Live data. You plug the device in & start the engine (KOER) & scroll through the pages & the sensor parameters are shown in real time. See previous pictures of a BA Falcon.

If you only want a hand held OBD11 code reader & eraser this one is a U480 from Ebay around $15 free postage. I use this more than the other one just for code reading.

Prety sure all vehicles after 2005 are suposed to be compliant. At $15 free postage its cheap & worth a try, & if you ever need to use it, it will have more than paid for its self.

DeBee, Can you do a reset with them? I already know what the fault codes will tell me. Nice to check though. But repairers have made a small fortune resetting the computer on my Transit. Would be good to check and then reset.

It would be nice to know if it will do the job before ordering, I realise it's only $15, that money is better in my pocket than someone else's, add to that, I don't need another piece of useless junk around the place.

I have a 2008 Transit.

I think I have worked out why the engine management light is coming on. Forgotten what the fault code is, but basically comes down to Turbobooster or egr faulty.

After half a dozen times and the respective day long investigations by dealers, they can come up with no answer. They just reset computer and ask for $300. Saying if it happens again come back. Unfortunately I am probably 300ks down the road by then.

Replaced EGR but still coming up as a fault. I have decided its no biggie and just keep driving until next service and ask them to do it then. Still a bit of stress I could do without wondering if it really is a problem.

OK, I have a 2007 2.4 diesel Transit and have had similar error codes come up, as you say Ford dealers don't seem to be much help, other than to tell me it's an EGR error code and then reset the computer.

I've just ordered one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EGR-Valve-blanking-plate-FORD-MK7-TRANSIT-2-2-2-4-tdci-Land-Rover-Citroen-relay-/120940252274 in the hope of eliminating the EGR, has not arrived yet, will let you know if it works out.

Hi Bill, the ELM327 i have used on a Ford ranger 2013 model & definitely works. It should work on all current model vehicles.
