Thermomix

Well now, it has been a while since I've been in here, but life has a habit of happening. So now, the Dream Pot has moved over, and the Thermomix has entered my life. It's not portable like the Dream Pot, and it hasn't arrived yet, but I was wondering if anyone else has one or is about to get one? Comments and recipes appreciated.

Nothing new in the marketing method, overpriced kitchen appliances/utensils, party plan, flog the gear to friends, neighbors or anyone that will listen.

I dislike the concept.

FWIW check out this link for the ThermoChef priced ay $795 http://www.newwavekitchenappliances.com.au/catalogue/products/thermochef-natura/thermochef-natura similar product $1200 cheaper.

It's discussed here on Whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1739562 and seems to compare very favourably and available through normal retailers.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Thermomix and quite a few bad....bad being they are overpriced and you can get things that do the same thing for less than the price.

As for the Thermal cooker, I am waiting for my Thermos Shuttle Chef to arrive, I have bought all the attachments like the cover, chopping/heat board, loaf pan, Bain Marie and Pudding basin + a cook book. I cant wait to test this out.

Good luck with it

Hi Romy,

My eldest daughter has asked for cash for their engagement and wedding so they can purchase their long wanted Thermomix.  My daughters friends have them and they all swear by them.  All the professional chefs use them as well so that tells me something.

Hi Romy, long time since I've seen your name pop up. Nice to see you back.

My girlfriend and her daughter have the Thermomix and rave about it! They use it ALL the time, and say it's paid for itself many times over. It doesn't just cook, it mixes and whatever as well.

My girlfriend also used hers in the caravan.

I haven't actually seen it in action because they live in FNQ and hadn't bought them the last time I visited.

All you bloody sheilas keeping secrets! So I did a google to find out what all this thermo business is about. Ah, I see. Yes, a very clever idea. Bit expensive though, especially for a solo. I think I'll stick with the jaffle iron. Hehe.

I reckon you'd like the Quirky Cooking blog, Romy. There are recipes posted there for TMs every day. And lots of them are for people who need gluten free meals:

Oohwee! Some goers and some knockers. Hey, that's all right. I like people to be honest. For myself, I figure I'm still working long hard hours, so anything that makes my life easier is worth it - in spite of the expense. In the big scheme of things, I know some people who pee their money up against a wall or gamble it away, so I figure my buying a Thermomix (TM) is not as wasteful as that. And besides, you can eat what comes out of my Thermomix. )

Thanks Beth. It's nice to be back. Love your comments, Gary, although I can think of another use for your jaffle iron. No way! I wouldn't do that! Shame on you for even thinking it.

Santa, I didn't just buy a TM because my friends have one. They don't, well one does. I don't do things just because others do though. I have a mind of my own. I was as skeptical as the others who went along to the demo party, but once I saw what it does, I was sold on the idea. You see, I have a really bad time with diverticulitis, so I have to be exceedingly careful with what's in my diet. Grains, nuts and seeds are out - pre Thermomix. Now I can not only grind them all in the TM so I can add them to my recipes, but I can make my own seeded (ground) bread now as well.

TM's aren't for everyone, but I like it and what it can do for me personally. Recipes anyone?

Has anyone checked out the Thermochef @ $795 http://www.newwavekitchenappliances.com.au/catalogue/products/thermochef-natura/thermochef-natura looks like a similar thing to Thermomix but $1200 cheaper.

Well, bugger me, Santa! Where were you when I paid for my Thermomix last week? It looks very, very similar to the TM. I wonder why the huge difference in price? Is the TM better quality, or is it overpriced? Is the ThermoChef a dud or superior in every way, including price? I'll be really annoyed if it's better. Does anyone out there own a ThermoChef like Santa found?

G'Day Romy,

I know nothing about either other than what I've read, there is a discussion on Whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1739562

regarding the merits of both machines.

I notice the Thermochef comes with a 2 year guarantee and is available through the likes of David Jones.

I've emailed my friend to get a couple of her favourite recipes for you. I know she makes bread and rolls, not sure what else.

Thaanks Beth! That's so nice of you. I'm hoping I can find a really good recipe for rye bread. It's the only healthy bread/bread rolls I can really tolerate without any nasty effects.

Santa, I reckon if you can get the Thermochef from David Jones, then it must be okay. They usually sell quality things. What a pity I didn't know about this last week though. I'll look up that website forum and see what they say about both. Thanks for the link.

I just checked out some of the link's forum members' comments, and one was a little feisty! I think the general consensus though, is:

both machines do a very similar job,
you can integrate recipes for either into either,
the Thermomix is dearer and it seemed debatable as to why,
there are subtle differences in looks and the location of the weighing scales,
but that the after sales support and service for the Thermomix is excellent.

Someone made a comment that both have forums for support, but then someone else said that Thermomix had a contact telephone number for on-the-spot-support as well.

All in all, it came down to price - and opinion. Well, I've paid for my Thermomix already, so I am going to get my money's worth and be cooking up a storm when it arrives! Love the thoughts of that!

Thanks Santa. I think I'll really enjoy playing with the TM. I love to cook, so that's half the battle. I just thought of another friend who has one, and she loves hers. The other friend, who had the demo party when she bought one, says she's cooked with it every day since getting it. Now that's a good recommendation.

And thanks too Shuttlebugs. Will check out your link. Apparently, I get an 'Everyday Cookbook' with the TM, but any recipe for it will be very welcome. I don't need gluten-free though. I just have to ensure that I don't eat nuts, seeds or grains unless they are processed finely - like almond meal. So that's what I'd like to do - add the ground ingredients to my bread and rolls, so that I still get the goodness from them without the problems.

I'm loving the Quirky Cooking blog, Shuttlebugs! It's just great, and thank you for steering me in that direction. The sorbet recipes done in the Thermomix sound so delish! I tried one at the demo party I went to - it was a mango sorbet, and that was melt-in-your-mouth beautiful!

Am hanging out for the TM recipes from Beth's friend too. I'm starting a folder for TM recipes. I don't know whether to print out hard copies and put them in a binder or just keep them on my iPad. I guess the iPad is more portable when caravanning. Hmmmm.

This is the reply from my friend. I hope it's of some help Romy.

So the Thermomix....well as far as recipes are concerned I cook mainly from the book you get with it when you purchase.  However my favourite recipes I just convert the ingredients over to grams and bung them in .  Tell her that time and use are a great teacher.  But the basics book covers almost everything.  I purchased other Thermomix books however I never use them.  The silicone mat is great too but Lisa(her daughter) purchased hers online  (different brand) much cheaper and is pretty happy....well she's not complaining.  For me the fact that you can weigh everything in it is big plus.  At present I'm using it for my weight watchers, weighing portion sizes just bung the plate/bowl on top and zero add food...zero add different food etc.  As it sits on my bench permanently its always at the ready for use.  As you know I did buy it for travelling but use it at home more.

Thank you so much for this, Beth! I really appreciate it. And please thank your friend for me too.

Luckily for me, my purchase comes with a free bread mat - as well as the cookbook. My friend who also has a TM added me to a Forum Thermomix, so I'm picking up lots of recipes and tips in there too. I think the thing I'm going to like most about it, is that, as your friend says, you can weigh everything in it, and you can chop and cook in it as well. So quick! One bowl, one wash up. I like that! Thanks again. When I get it, and if I can remember how to post photos in here, I'll tease you all with some pics.

Congratulations Romy 5152 you won't be sorry. Overpriced? Isn't anything these days, paying for support, ideas, ongoing recipes and help? Yes probably but it can be looked at as insurance I guess. There is another model Thermomix on the market and can be purchased on eBay and it doesn't have the electronic buttons just dials. My son has two in his kitchens in the business. There is no backup with these though and getting them fixed may be expensive although he has never had any problem with them. I've had mine for about 4 months now and just love it. Used it most days sometimes several times a day. Doing preserving, making relish and lemon curd is a dream. No standing there watching things so they don't burn. Wonderful. Sorbet to die for in seconds. I too had many appliances over the years and this one replaces most of them. Not had the food processor out since I bought the thermi and my food processor was a major player in my kitchen. Makes raw salads and raw meals in seconds. Clean up a breeze too. Just put water in it after cooking and give it a buzz, rinse and dry.
Like you said, many folk think nothing of their drinking, smoking and gambling habits. Mine is eating and I guarantee if you added up the others and compared them to the cost of the Thermi (even if it may be overpriced here in Australia) you will win hands down. I wish you well with it. It's exciting producing something new with it.
By the way the Thermocook in my opinion is not quite the quality of the thermomix. I watched a demo at Sth Melbourne markets one day and I ended up having to show the lady demonstrating possible uses for it so the ideas, support and enthusiasm certainly were not there as with the Thermi. If your not a cook no amount of talking will convince you of its worth. A bit the same as a non golfer getting excited about a Big Bertha.
All the best with it.

I do the iPad version of recipes, much easier. The basic book does cover most things as Beth's friend says. just experiment with your own recipes.

Okay, now you've got me super-excited, Evie n Rhys! And the fact that you like golf too - woohoo! I have a Big Bertha, which my husband took to regularly borrowing when we both played competition golf, but then his knee went on him, and he no longer plays.

I agree with your words about the overpricing of most things these days. Just to give you a not-so-similar example, but it shows another side to the way things are nowadays, I had taken in a small pot of beetroot slices to work (for my afternoon tea) yesterday that I had cooked and pickled myself, and offered some of it to them to try. They all said how good it was, and asked had I noticed that the tinned beetroot slices now are a lot thinner? Well, I hadn't, because I do my own now, but one even went so far as to say the liquid in the last tine she bought wasn't that deep reddish-purple, but a kind of light pink. Not the same thing, I know, but it just goes to show that perhaps quality is being more and more compromised these days. The price of the TMX did put me off initially, but after seeing the robustness of the machine and the demo, and knowing how it can now help me health-wise, I was convinced it was a quality appliance and just what I needed. I can see so many possibilities with it, as I am an avid cook - take after my Mum there. When we had the family property, it used to be known as the 'experimental station', because she was always experimenting with new recipes - not in the TMX, because back then, I don't think it even existed, but that's where I developed my love of cooking, and both my son and daughter are the same now. No wonder my job is in teaching.

Could you please give me some more info on preserving? And relish and lemon curd making? Or are they in the EDC? I'd like to have a crack at making jam in the TMX. Mum used to make lots of jam, so I might be able to share some of her recipes with you, if you like.

It's such a co-incidence that you mentioned the iPad app too - my friend Karen, who had the demo party, only said to me yesterday that she would show me the one she uses - next time she comes for a coffee. I have to tell you too, I was in Facebook last night, and saw a message that Karen had added me to a Forum Thermomix page. So I went into it, thanked her for adding me, and started reading some of the posts. These are all local people, so I know them well. One of them, a young friend who is the same age as my daughter, nearly 30, said that her husband wasn't at that keen on her buying her thermie. Well, Brendan is a big boy, and by that I mean solid, and he works hard, so he likes his food. He now has a pet name for the thermie - Uma (Thermo - Thurman). lol His wife says it's interesting there being 3 in their marriage. Hehe! He's totally sold on it now.

Quick update. The delivery of my TMX has been postponed for a little while. My poor TMX dealer emailed me last night to say she is in the process of miscarrying their third baby and has to go away for a few days. Poor, poor love! I so feel for her. She even wanted to come to my home the day she gets back to deliver the TMX and do the demo, but I told her no way. I can wait - and I can. Nothing takes precedence over something like that. I wish them all the very best today.

There is a recipe in the basic book for a lemon curd or lemon something or other. I don't have it with me just now soo can't check. I adapt my own recipes to the machine and it works so well. I go put boiling water into the jars while the Thermi does e work. When it beeps, empty jars and pour it in. wonderful.
The white chocolate custard over plumb cake is a winner too, fabulous and I don't even like chocolate much.
You will have such fun when you get it. So sad about your rep, a very trying time I'm sure.
All the best.

Thanks Evie n Rhys. I do the same thing with the jars and boiling water when I'm making my pickled beetroot, and it's always been okay too. I love lemon curd, but haven't had it in years, so I'll be checking that recipe out too.
Even though I don't have it yet, I bought all the ingredients I need to cook the concentrated stock in the thermie demo, and another lady is going to bring thermie around to my house on Friday and do it instead of my rep. I am so looking forward to it.

My rep is doing pretty good. She is sad, but has the philosophy that it apparently just wasn't meant to be, and that Nature knows best sometimes.

Thanks again, and happy travels! Hope to talk to you again soon.
