Van & MH rego NSW


Christ! can we use your address to rego mine . Couple of hundred seems fine but 500 to get bigger and deeper potholes is over the top. If history tells us anything we can expect anywhere from 15 /25 % increases every year . When you consider a box trailer with a load capacity the weight of my van is $54 and if used by a builder is on the road every day.  Then there is the  vehicle insurance and inspection fees  in NSW vans are classed as motor vehicles not what they really are , trailers

I think it would be interesting to see how much charges have gone up in the last three yrs. Don't forget, along with registration, you have insurance both compulsory and comprehensive, and petrol. I bet there would be BIG increases in cost of keeping vehicle on road. Oh I didn't mention tyres, spare parts and services. All those levies hidden in the cost.

Maybe I don't want to know, I might depress me.

Sure as hell adds up when you are on the road,and i am not taking into consideration of NSW rego prices ,when we took 12 months off work two years ago and did 34.000ks around Oz,at the end of the twelve months it  had cost us $34.000 .It worked out to be $1000 per 1000ks.

I sent a post to some one earlier regarding how just having 60/80 kilos extra weight carted with you can add up to extra $$$. For every kilo carted for a distance of 1000ks the numbers fall out at around 1.12 cents. i know it dosn't appear to be much but over 1000ks that adds up to $10 If doing the big lap say at 30.000ks that adds up to around $337 odd dollars.It all adds up at the end of the day.that is one reason i do not carry extra fuel if i do not have to,as the price you pay for the fuel at where ever as it maybe cheaper ,dosn't always work out to be cheaper in the end as the extra weight get's lost with the extra fuel one uses to carry it.That also goes for water.

Are those your actual running costs or does that total include all your living expenses, to me it does seem strange to apply these costs against the number of K's travelled.

I have found that the biggest cost in running a vehicle of any description is the yearly depreciation which in my case has usually averaged about $5000 a year on a initial purchase price of about $55,000

The old chestnut has come to the surface again so I contacted my local pollie to express concerns at  the cost of Van and MH  rego in NSW and to see what their thoughts were on the subject. Not unexpected I got the  "Blame the other guy response"  I think now is the time for all NSW Van and MH owners to band together and pepper their local pollie with requests to  look at the comparisons with other states who charge less than half that of NSW.  Near enough to $500.00 to register a basic 16 footer is over the top and can't be justified  in anyone eyes .

 

 It needs  all NSW  RV Vehicle owners to become active to change this situation,NOW

That amount of money is just unbeliavable, it is no wonder people who come from NSW ,try to rent / borrow a friend or family member in  another state to have their vihicle registered in. I know people who live on the boarders of NSW/VIC /NSW/SA who have all their vihicles registered the next state other than NSW .Now i under stand why now.

Lucky me has a slide on which is included with the ute as a single unit. And the fact that I'm a pensioner means I get both rego and licence in NSW free.

Now there's a point a slide on may be the answer . Good point thanks for that. I pointed out to the pollies that a box trailer that can carry more than the weight of my van doesn't even cost $100.00 But they say a van is a motor vehicle while a trailer is a trailer. So show me the self propelled mechanism on a van and I agree it's a motor vehicle. That's when the dumb silence pervades the room and they move on to another question. And we pay these people for What

Pension rate for our 16ft vanin SA is $46.50 and so we are ok with that.

Rego is only a small part of the car cost I guess the gree slip would be a bit rough?

(we take our concessional discount on the dearer Patrol rego .. I thought that there was one discount per couple .. must check)

Its all based on the weight of a van, so the same charges are made as to a motor vehicle as they are based on weight as well.

The only difference is that a van does not require the third party green slip.

Its all a rip off but in saying nsw does have free rego for pensioners, you do still have to pay for the third party green slipfor a vehicle but the actual rego part is free, a caravan is totaly free.

So you have the tug in hubby's name & the van in wife's name, a bit harder for solo's.

I believe that other states only give a small discount. Also spoke to a guy some time back & said  that Qld rego's are dearer than ours.by time he got his discount on a tug it was still about the same as nsw normal price.

 These costs were for fuel/living/c/ van park fees /sight seeing. If we had not done a lot of free camping add another $5.000/6.000 on top of that as some of the parks can get up around $45/50 per night. I never take depreciation into account ,as that's just the down fall one has to wear, are we would just have to leave the vehicle garaged from brand new.

Might be that you need to purchase a vehicle after the rapid early depreciation phase.

 

My 1995 GQ Patrol was purchased in 1999 for $30,000.   Probably worth a couple of thousand now if I could find a buyer that is.

So  over 14 years I have 'lost' $28,000 or thereabouts...  or around $2000/year.   Not too bad I suppose.  I have got a lot more than $28K of pleasure from the old girl and she keeps on giving.  The Patrol that is.  (It costs about that for a few months touring UK & Europe).

We are asked to pay a lot for the pleasure of driving round in the latest nice shiny thingo.

Hi Cupie
Its not just the nice shiny thingo that you get to drive, when you buy new or near new its the latest safety features such as multiple air bags, emergency brake assist, traction control, ABS braking, electronic stability control and many safety features that are constantly being upgraded to help with lessening injury if you are in a crash and even help to avoid an accident in the first place.
I would much prefer less money in my bank account than major injury or death, ok so the depreciation is higher but so be it I'll wear that.

Have heard back from the Pollies concerned and they are now committed to reviewing the registration costings for Vans and Motor Homes . The general consensus is that yes they are high and need to be examined. So here's hoping the Little Guy has a win at last.
