Whitsunday to Lightning Ridge and Back.

I'm planning a trip from Whitsunday (my home) to Lightning Ridge and back. I intend to go via Emerald , Roma, St George etc. and return either via Bourke, Cunnamulla, Charleville or Goondawindi, Miles, Banana or maybe Dalby, Kingaroy, Gaydah Biloela etc. I think I prefer the first option as I like to avoid heavily populated areas.

Finding campsites is no problem with CAW and Wikicamps but I am interested in what my sightseeing options are. Does anyone have ideas of what to see and do on the above routes? Any side trips that may be of interest? When is the best time to go? At the moment I'm thinking August.

Check out Carnarvon Gorge Nat Park - well worth a visit. Unfortunately the only accommodation option is at the fairly expensive Takkarakka campground.

The self drive Car Door tours - get guides from Info Centre - are a great introduction/overview to Lightning Ridge.

Thanks Wendy I have just looked at the car door thing on Google. Looks great. I love Carnarvon Gorge but agree about the camping. Nuga Nuga is much better.

Will be in Emerald for about a month in August. We are going fossicking for sapphires. Then down to Charleville and Yowah for some opals. Don't expect to find much but looking for them is fun. The country is beautiful. I'm all packed and itching to go but alas we have a small matter of a new baby due this month and the resulting family celebrations. Love it!!
