Jackadgery NSW and surrounds

Hi there, i hope this post is not too long.....

i would be interested to know if anyone has camped on the river at Cangi Bridge Road, Cangi NSW .... just off the highway north from Jackadgery on the Mann River.  Looks to be a great place with reasonable access back to the highway. Do not recommend access via the bridge at Jackadgery as the road is about 20klm narrow in places, unsealed and used by timber trucks. Personally would not like to have to reverse back down the mountain there to give way to a timber jigger! I believe it is in Camps book. I have seen vans camped there and also tents and kids swimming in the river there. area obviously prone to bush fires as normal for all like areas.

The site is  literally on the bank of the river which is crystal clear over rock and pebbles. You could also set up on the grassy banks.  Only consideration would be if the river came uP quickly. Normal to find some cattle grazing there

I have spent years camping with kids at the Girl Guide Camp which is on the top of the hill on the eastern approach to the bridge at Jackadgery. i am actually going to contact the property manager in Grafton about opening it up for overnight or short term use by travellers (would be a cost obviously).  As a 30 year member of the guide assoc, i would prefer to give site fees to them rather than any other entity - i will post to forum results of my enquiry.

Lollback Rest Area is also right on the eastern approach to the Mann River bridge - well maintained and suitable for small number of vans. No river access from this side of river.

Jackadgery Caravan Park would be great for vans, but my experience with cabin accom left me cold and i asked for my money bacK, before I had even unpacked my bag. The camping sites however are very nice, small shop is  there to cater to both local and park residents. River access by way of track down to the river. Swimming with caution, rocky river bed Minor rapids in places, And shallow places. Popular with canoe and kayakers for overnight Trips, not good for fiberglass boats due to the rocks around Jackadgery.

Have also checked out the Nat Park sites along the highway between Glen Innes and Grafton and you could spend a week or two going from one place to the next between Glen and Grafton. Stacks to see on this strip of highway.

Another place further north between Casino and Tenterfield is Rocky River signposted a few Klms east of Drake. Similar to Cangi, about 40klms drive down mountain to river, partially unsealed road down to the sandy bed river at the bottom. Same considerations as Cangi re flood and fires. Often see campers down on the river, especially in school hols.

As I have lived in Grafton and now live on far north coast, if i am home, i can easily check out any places that interest you  on the north coast .... Just PM me, if i dont know it, i soon will!

cheers,

Chaslib

We stayed a night at Jackadgery - right near the river and the bridge - toilets, and a very pleasant spot to camp over.
