DAY LIGHT SAVING HAS ENDED

I woke up this morning at normal time, 5.00am, normally dark untill 7.00am these days but seemed to get lighter early, I thought geee, Inverell gets light earlier for some reason. I looked at the time and it was 6.00am. Stupid me forgot that day light saving finished didn't I. I even checked up a couple of weeks ago for when it finished.

Yeah, I did the rounds of the clocks in the house. Takes forever going backwards. Better to go forwards. Kinda sad to think it's a sign that winter's on the way. If I could get my docs to stop fiddling around with me, I'd be headed north for sure.

I did a search on the net and wrote down when daylight savings starts and ends for the next couple of years. I put it up on my notice board, so I knew when it was going to finish. I texted the kids and told them to put their clocks back an hour last night. They didn't know so I have done my good deed for the week.

We have 2 mobile phones . 1 switched the time back automatically ,the other hasn't .

They both auto switch when we go into a different time zone within a few minutes .

Strange !

Living in the Tweed Valley, I can see Qld from the verandah...in fact, during AEDST, I can get to Qld before I leave here confuse.

For those 6 'summer' months of the year, the folk of Far Nth NSW and Sth Qld are constantly trying to adjust schedules, routines, lifestyles etc to conform with two timezones....what a drag it is, esp for those that work in the other state to where they live and school their kids..... I am not strongly of the opinion either way regarding the efficacy of daylight saving, I just wish the states would agree...for the whole year!

Yep, daylight saving has ended...and thank goodness for that. smile

Just have to remember there is a time difference when daylight saving has ended interstate if contacting that area. yawn

Ahhh yes! Finally got that hour of sleep back that I lost when daylight saving started. biggrin

For those of us in the southern states the long evenings in summer (with an extra hour due to daylight saving) are the best part of the day.

We don't muck about with nature in Qld.

No DST here.

Bad for the curtains & cows.

(The extra hour of sun during the day fades the curtains  ..  The cows milking time gets all mucked up when we turn the clocks forward or back)

The only time daylight saving really bothered me was when I did mid-dawns on air for a while. It was normally a 6 hour shift which was long enough, but when DS changed back to EST, and the clock was wound back an hour, I was on air for 7 hours! Most people are sound asleep at 3am but there I was reading the 3am news twice!

I guess that extra hour applies to all shift workers, like ambos, taxi drivers, etc.

I've never been able to understand why anyone would think it was necessary in this country.   I've lived and worked in Scotland and Canada, so can see the reasoning there, but in Australia ?  Ridiculous in my opinion.

I love daylight saving!! Gives you more time to spend with family and friends outside in the evenings!!!
I am also a shift worker and try and make sure I dont get to do that extra hour when it changes back!!!!

Some-one else will no doubt have a better explanation, but my understanding is that it's basically because the daylight hours are less in winter.

In summer, we used to go to bed in Broad Daylight, at 10.30 at night.

Curtains fading etc., is a lot of hogwash.  There are exactly the same number of hours of sunlight as there always was.   You just get up earlier or later.

Cheers,

Sheba.

Because of a drought in Tasmania in 1967 DST was introduced to save power [mostly hydro power].In 1971 DST was introduced into NSW ,VIC,SA,ACT,and QLD who dropped DST in 1972.
WA and QLD dabbled at various time during the 80s but now do not observe it despite controversy. It was introduced mainly to combat power shortages .Can you remember the planned blackouts. I remember being sent home from work as power was shut down ,could not run the machines....Further info can be sought via Google .Search daylight saving Australia.
Hope this answers your question......Alan the Mongrel........

 Gee that's a bit harsh isn't it?

All I know is that that's what Premier Joe Bejelkie said .... so don't you worry about that.  He knew all about cows and chooks too.

LOL

DLS to save power makes sense. There was a time when there were no electric fridges, no electric stoves, no plethora of kitchen gadgets, no electric hot water, no electric heaters or air conditioners, etc. And then during the 50s, whammo! Electricity was being consumed like it was going outta style!

I would like DLS to start now and end in October. When it is 30c - 40c at 5pm around here there is no one about. They are all inside with aircon, which is now in every new home. You cannot open windows until the sun goes down around 9pm, it may not be any cooler so inside people stay with the aircon.

In all seriousness this post  ..

We had a trial of DST in Qld some years ago when I was still working & I loved it.

My habit was to get up at first light & drive into work in the CBD  ... before the traffic.

I woul finish work by the clock at 5pm (when at all possible).  Again before the traffic build up on the freeway.

DST gave me an extra hour with the kids before their bed time.  We would eat dinner outside around the pool. A fantastic end to the day.    Well not really the end of the day because I would work on for a few hours on the laptop by the pool till the analogue mobile's battery ran out.
