Hi all , well im strating out on a bit of a treck up to queensland . My little dog and I are seasoned short distance weekend travellers and now stepping out for a bit of an adventure . I live in the grampians ( Victoria ) and the nights are getting cold - so off wee go !! I intend going up the inland hwy - as opposed to the coast . Any hints as to the best spots to camp over ( in a transit van ) i only want to travell about 400 kms a day - im not wanting to beeak any land speed records :)
and suggestions would be appreciated , thanks .
Welcome ICC, we are on the west coast so not much help, but the Camps Australia Wide book (Camps7) should give you some good spots also their sister publication Caravan Parks Australia wide, or as someone here suggested download the Wiki app onto your mobile phone instead.
Main thing is wherever you camp seek those spots where others are for security and not too close to some country towns. I have just bought a Transit but haven't taken it on an overnight trip yet. Suggest you remove your surname from your profile and perhaps your location, put Victoria instead for personal security reasons...

G'day Maybe this will help make up your mind. Parts of the Mitchall, Lansborough, Top end of Kidman Way very rough and narrow. Mitchall carrying lots of cattle road trains. very wavy, take sea sick tablets, lots of places with high grass and washed out verges with up 4 inch drop offs. But I made it through and presently camped up at Barcaldine, If you have UHF talk to truckies. I was towing 23ft van so in your bus you will have no worries, take your time in the rough and narrow bits.
Very impressive country after all the rain, grass everywhere, emu's, large kanga's and thousands of goats well worth the drive just to see the change in the landscape.

.........and locusts plagues, if fitting any mesh for grasshoppers, make sure your number plate is not covered, take it off and place over the mesh if you have to, last time I was over that way the police were stopping and booking caravanners for obscured number plates. Autumn in particular is a bad time for them, see this link;
Welcome from me too INCOMMUDICADO, enjoy here and out in the playground.
I am heading to Townsville as I type this and currently over seas in Manilla, well actually it's Manilla NSW 30 km north of Tamworth, this is the second night here now with great people from this very same forum. I leave here and head to Inverell just up the road and east a little to meet more people from this forum. Then heading toward Lightning Ridge, Longreach, Winton, Hughenden, Charters Towers and Townsville, I have until the 19/4. Stay in Townsville for at least a month and then flip a coin.

We went through to Vic from Brisbane in October/November last year, so basically the opposite way to you.
Depending on which way you decide to go through NSW, I can highly recommend a free camp at Frogs Hollow, Lake Cargelligo. It's an RV friendly town with a lovely camp by the lake.
We decided to go SW through Moree and on to Bourke, then straight down Kidman Way through Hillston, and on to Hay. Hay is also a nice friendly town with a free camp on the mighty Murrumbidgee River.
Roma/Mitchell is a part of my family history, so a favourite place for me to head. I can't advise on camps though, because I have so many rellies with properties, I have ample free camping sites!
