OK, wife has a Kindle with a keyboard, which she loves. I see much cheaper Kindles for sale, with no keyboards. How do you order books on these? Does a "virtual" keyboard come up on the screen?
I am trying to avoid the process of downloading to computer and then transferring to Kindle. The fewer steps, the better!
Cheers, Tony

Dont bother with a Kindle...get an ipad....you can download any Kindle books to the ipad thru Amazon. And you can also use your ipad for internet on your travels!! I bought the Kindle a few years back and loved it...but love the ipad better!! There is a free Kindle app that you load on your ipad or other device and you can load your books to either or both. My partner now has the old kindle and I download my books to ipad and his books to kindle...using the same Amazon account!!! Man I LOVE technology!!! :)
You have to register your Kindle with Amazon and have an accessible wifi network to download from the Amazon site. Don't ask me how it works but it does - that also allows for automatic Kindle updates to automatically downloaded and installed - don't know how that works either ... it's magic :)
If you have a kindle 3G with wifi you just go to the kindle store and it will download books straight to your kindle. You must set up an account with amazon first though. Only have to set up your bank details the first time
We are waiting for the new Kindle to be relest Paperwhite 3G-Wi-fi the WI-FI is on the market but not 3G , With paperwhite you can readit in the sunshine and is back ilte for night reading

Paperwhite is the way to go. I see that the wifi models are available in Aus now.
I wanted an E-reader last XMAS & couldn't wait for the then indefinate release in Aus of the Paperwhite. The Kobo Glow with its built in lighting like the Paperwhite was available. I prefer Kindle to Kobo.
I think that Amazon use what they call 'Whispernet' in the US to send books, updates etc. I assume that it uses in the USA the AT&T 3G network & probably Telstra 3G in Aus (Rogers in Canada?) etc. If you don't have a 3G model then it probably accesses 'Whispernet' via any 3G hotspot and up & downloads that way. I assume that Amazon has contractual arrangements with the major Telcos in their market countries to utilize bulk internet capacity.
I purchased a Kindle WiFi 3G keyboard model & use it with a $27 case and LED light. Still using their (Amazon) free books. Have downloaded around 100 of them and am only 3/4 way through their catelogue. Then there are all the other free catelogues that I can download to my laptop & convert using the free Cougar software onto the Kindle. Then there is the local library E - book loan service. I have read 45 E-books since XMAS (some pretty small) & not turned a paper page yet. Love it.
ps. the advantage of e-readers is that you can use them in direct sunlight unlike for instance, my Toshiba Satellite laptop. Easy on the eyes too .. no eyestrain after reading for hours, again unlike the PC screen.
