Can anyone recommend a model?? How tricky they are to wire up to the van.
Bought the one advertised at ALDI a month or so again but looks like it is going to be too tricky to wire in.
How much (roughly) would one expect to pay for a reversing camera?
Also...is there a camera that can be mounted on the caravan and it can be on while driving so that it shows traffic behind. (in other words, not just for reversing!!)
If you are wanting to bye another camera ,don't bye a wireless type been there and dun that they are crap, bye a hard wired one ,I bought mine from the Melbourne caravan show about 5years ago from Saftey Dave ,back then I payed $410.00 for two camera,s and all the cable,s, and the monitor ,only trouble I have had was one cable packed it in,as far as leaving the camera on ,mine is on all the time I switch between car and van mainly on the van camera,I asked about leaving it on all the time and he said it can be left on it won't hert the camera,it is no different to looking in the rear view mirror, fitted mine myself if you are a handy man it is pretty easy to do hope this is of some help.

Purchased mine from Elinz electronics Victoria, off the net. Cost $175 now about $200. Has 2 way switching 1 for reversing 1 for rear of van. Hard wired, would not use wireless system as signal can distort. I had to crawl around underneath to get the cable through but well worth the effort. I now don't use any "driving"mirrors only standard rear view mirrors (Prado) and have the camera on all the time while driving and have no blind spots anywhere. It is not illegal do drive without extra mirrors, only requirement by law is you must have clear vision behind & down sides. Camera wouldn't be with out it. Great investment.
Olley 46 wow you say you paid 4grand!!!!!!!

Got mine through Safety Dave as well. I think it was about $350. I got them to install it, came to my home and did a great job. About another $300 for installation. It has a colour monitor that suction cups to the windscreen and the rear camera has a mic in it so you can hear your off sider as they direct you back. I also leave it on while driving and use it as a rear view mirror.
Are you shore about not needing extra mirrors on your 4wd I have a Prado as well and wouldn't tow the van without the extra mirrors ,maybe my caravan may be wider than yours,I thought the law was if towing a caravan you must have extension mirrors regardless of camera,s.

You have to navigate to Products on the top bar then to Extras and a window will load with another link for car and caravan two camera system @ $295 plus fitting.Any decent audio shop should be able to fit the system to your tug and van.

A little bit expensive hay what ,a bit of a figure mishap, been fixed now ,it would want to have a good picture for 4grand,I am getting old sorry.
I have had an Aldi camera for nearly 2 years now. Easy to fit and works great. I wired mine to the tail/clearance light on the van, so I just turn on the tail lights to use the camera.

In Sa if you can see with your standard mirrors down each side of the van you are not required to use extended mirrors and cameras are not recognised as being an alternative to mirrors

Hey thanks for that. We are having some electrical stuff done on the van soon so maybe I should get them to wire in the ALDI one we already have. So if it is wired to the tail lights instead of reversing lights can we have it on while we travel and use like rear vision mirror (as others have described)
We got our van today, and I asked the caravan guy about the legalities of not using extended mirrors and just the reversing camera and he said no way is that legal. If your mirrors cannot see down the sides of your van, then you will need the extended mirrors. The camera only shows you the back of the van not what is at the sides.
Also it was great to be able to turn the camera on while driving to see if there were any cars behind you on the road. The mirrors do this of course, but it's amazing to see it.
Question: where do you locate the camera on the back of the van - high, low or where.....also is difficult to train the brain to turn the steering wheel when reversing via camera.

Ideally the camera should give an image similar to what you are used to seeing in a rear vision mirror. Nearly all cameras flip the image so the left hand side of the vehicle appears on the LHS of the screen, this is vital.

I want to know if these reversing cameras are suitable to be on full time. I was about to hook up one through an Anderson plug tapped out of the accessories connection in the flat plug on the tug, any thoughts would be appreciated . I want to mount and use the camera full time

I powered my reverse camera on the van via the tail lights, when I wanted it on I just turned the park lights on, a lot less wiring to go wrong. cheers blaze

Hi Buffy, Sorry for the delay in replying.
Yes, I travel with my tail lights on and this also activates the camera. Very easy to wire up. If you need help email me.

I leave mine on all the time when travelling.
First time I used it was a bit unnerving to look in the mirror and see the road behind -- "OH SH!* I'VE LOST THE VAN". Took a few k's to get used to it.

I can't see why not, basically they have the same internals as security cameras used 24/7. Vibration would be the only long term killer, and that is going to happen whether the camera is on or off.....

Could have used one today, backing the van into the garage I hit the wall. Just for fun it'd be cool to put a monitor on the back and the camera on the dash so they can see when it's safe to overtake.
