I read on a post here, that someone at a tourist bureau had told the person that the Ridge was rough or something meaning the same phase.I bet who ever said that has never been there. It is one of the most friendly places in oz.Lightning Ridge possesses the ability to transport you. It takes you out of the here and now, and put's you into a rich and vibrant caricature of the true out back.So much to enjoy a week would be pushing it, to every thing on offer .Also a few intersting day trips also .Will we be back? You betcha we will.
It was me who posted the query asking about Lightning Ridge, it was a volunteer at one of the information centres. he was saying only what he was told by people who had been there hence my query. This was a few years ago since then I have been reassured that its a great place to visit and we are at present planing a trip with friends to visit Lightning Ridge in a few weeks time. We love the Outback and have travelled extensively throughout the outback.

I have been to Lightning Ridge twice now,and will be there again in early June ,great place we spent four days there the first time plenty to explore ,we stayed at the Opal caravan park both times have been around the block 1.5 times and that caravan park would be the best we have stayed in,great place it is a must visit.
Loved Lightning Ridge, was amazed at the number of P.O. boxes in comparison to the stated population. It is a place well worthy of a longer stay than we had of only 4 nights. Geoff and Bev
Lightning Ridge sounds like a great place cant wait to get there in a few weeks time, are bookings essentials at the opal caravan park

If you are towing your van with that penny farthing you may need to book it will be 2050 before you arrive, only joking,we just rolled up plenty of site,s there would have to be something on for them to be full heaps of room.
We never book in to any where, as it restricts you to much , as if you want to linger some place that takes your fancy and you have booked into some place ,you have to be at the place you have booked into. You should not have a problem getting in though. And if for some reason it is booked out there is another three c/ parks out there.Dont forget the Artesian Bora Bathit is a pandoras, opwn 24/7,It is a pandora's box of pleasure, so pack your bathers. Some thing i would recomend for first time visitors is a tour. We went with Black Opal Tours, and loved it. They take you around the surreal and mysterious dwellings that form so much of the character of the town, from ramshackle corrugated iron huts to great follies such as Amigo's Castle. To see so many dilapidated huts, built on or near the owner's shafts to mines below, with no plumbing/electricitey or roads provided, you wonder how on earth anyone could bear it. But then you remember the Opal.
It can get cold at night, but beautiful during the day at the this time of year....Out amongst the humpies abandoned trucks and buses and mining machinery standing derelict is the Astronomer's Monument. This is a must see.Lightning Ridge does funny things to people , and there is no better exponent of this than the Black Queen .Originally hailing from Sydney the Black Queen and her husband were both successful executives , who gave up their comfy lives to be in Lightning Ridge . You will find this out in the Black Queens home in an interactive theater experience, where the tale becomes ever more magical and fantastic. The building is as facinating as the storey. Also go have a meal at the pub, that is another storey.,,,
