I was talking to son in law who is a full on technocrat and complaining about my mobile phone deal which is incredibly expensive if you exceed your data allowance which this month cost an extra $170 (must have spent too much time on nomad forum) and my calls are at $16 cents per minute which is a good rate, normal monthly spend around $60.00,plus home phone of around $80.00
Son in law then told me about about the deal he is using with Kogan mobile using Telstra 3g network which offers the following;
30 Days 90 Days 365 Days
Cost $29.00 $79.00 $299.00
Calls across all three options are Unlimited and include 1300 1800 numbers as well as all voicemail includes Mobiles, fixed line and Australia wide calls
Sms/mms unlimited across all three options
Data 6 GB per month on all three options with daily limit of 400MB (plenty of time on nomad forum)
The 365 day deal looks good to me as you end up getting two months free based on the monthly rate, I will also teduce my home call rate to almost base cost as we have home phone that is wireless linked to my mobile.
A rough estimate is this service would cost me $25.39 per month based on 365 day deal and save me at least $60.00 per month or $720 in the 12 months.
Has anyone else used this provider, is it really too good to be true because it certainly looks an excellent deal please let me know your thoughts.

No David, sorry you have it wrong , Aldi and Kogan provide slightly less 3G coverage than Telstra, with 97% of the Australian population covered, in comparison to the 99% 3G coverage you would get using a Telstra or Boost mobile.
Boost, Kogan and Aldi do not have 4G.

Try a $5 for delivery free sim and see how you go, a week with free calls, sms and 100mb of internet access to check it out.
I have the 365 days for $299 and happy as. I still have adsl at home but I'm moving towards getting rid of it and home phone. I use voip now at home and I can transfer and route my home number through my mobile phone. All technology that is available.
You must take into account that it is the 3g network and lacks the internet speed of 4g. It is acceptable though for me so far. My suggestion is to try it for the free week at $5 for delivery of the sim and then a month if you need further testing. I feel very secure in being able to use the phone when out and at an affordable rate and Telstra network.
Aldi also have a cheap mobile deal using the Telstra network very similar to Kogan evidently they are both using the crappy part of Telstra and from what I have read from reviews the Kogan support, if you have a problem, leaves a lot to be desired, also you can pick up your sim from your nearest Aldi, whereas there can be along wait for the sim from Kogan to arrive.
Anyway google Aldi Mobile there is already quite a bit of info out there even tho Aldi mobile only started 6th March.
I'm sure dealing with Aldi would be excellent, I haven't had any problems with Kogan but I didn't port my number. For me the price difference per month just makes Aldi out of reach for me. The $15 for 365 is just great though.
Just checked the Aldi option and they do not appear to have 365 day option and I dont want to have to renew all the time I like the idea of 12 months at a time. and from what I read Kogan are using the 3G full Telstra network, my phones are not compatible with 4G network

It is using a part of Telstra old network 3G , not Next G or 4G it is a slower speed for internet but for phone I don't think it would matter , The only other if you have a network problem who would you call .
Is there any other yearly deals other than the 299.00 deal? My older son was telling me about them the other day, thats for a mobile I'm talking about.
Go to the Whirlpool site http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/ there is a lot of info ,I was going to look a Kogan even got one of there sims sent to me , but looks like thy are starting to play around with the Data download limits and not getting a great reception from users about it so i am waiting to port my number over to Aldi see what thy are like lots out there if you can get Optus or Vodafone coverage

Thanks Sheba your referral back to previous posts on Grey nomad was very helpful I should have thought of doing that.
I have spoken to Kogan and they are about to get another customer also spoke to Telstra just to check if they could do a deal similar to Kogan and they could go nowhere near it so I guess I will have access to 97% of the population on Kogan and not 99% with Telstra but save a significant amount of money each year.

For $5.00 purchase a sim and use it to see how it works for you. You could lose listening to too much silly hoohah that goes on, so make your own decision. 99.3% - 97% = 2.3%. If they are true to this figure, it would be hard to pick the difference.
I'm in Beechworth nth East Vic. I travel to different rural locations every day in my region. I carry two phones, one on the full Telstra network, one with the Kogan sim. There has been absolutely no difference what so ever. If I notice any difference, I'll notify you all here.
We let our landline go about 12 months ago as we saw this and the net attached to it as an unnecessary expense. It was hard letting it go but have never looked back. We run smart phones also for our internet as mobile modems. We ran the VOIP but it didn't get used really unless I phoned the US which would only cost 12c a call. With the 3.5gb that come with our Telstra phone plans plus the kogan sim, this gives us 9.5gb in data total per month.

It appears that when people have gone to recharge their Kogan Mobile account they have been told sorry we dont want you as a customer, go elsewhere and port your number. Seems that Kogan have monitored usage in an effort to weed out those that are using their Kogan Mobile for business.
However they seem to have caught not only high usage customers (less profit for Kogan) but also a number of average use customers. A few days ago Kogan without fanfare introduced a 400Mb cap on daily usage to their initially advertised unlimited 6GB/month plans. This has also resulted in a number of customers also being booted from the Kogan system.
Have now just waded thru a large number of the posts on Whirlpool re Kogan Mobile, have decided not to chance it by connecting to Kogan at least if I connect to Aldi and have problems I will have someone to go and have a whinge to at the local Aldi store.
I have sim only no contract with TPG on Optus carrier $17.99 per month $550 calls and text 1.5G Data downloadper month we have had this for 2 years last time we were away we were getting signal with it in places our Telstra were not
My wife and I were with Vodaphone (no plan, plan) since the late 1980s.We seldom use mobile phones so that no plan was reasonable for us as we were only charged when we made calls; however the calls were expensive.
Last December, we changed to Amaysim which piggy backs off Optus. So far we have had no problems with reception in southern Queensland and around the Coffs Harbour area. You can purchase a sim card from Woolworths, Coles etc from $10 with no contracts which can last up to 90-days.The cost of a call is 12cents a minute with no flagfall.
For info: ALL resellers on the networks of Optus and Telstra (and Vodafone too...but lets not go there ) will be 'compromised' in relation to upload/download speeds and even (on rare occasions) call quality, relative to the transmission site owners and their clients....
this is most obvious to users during 'peak periods' (these peak periods seem to regularly grow in number and duration BTW).
That said, the deals from resellers are most certainly and consistently more $ attractive.
I am on an Amaysim $40/month plan, unlimited calls, 4Gb data, no contract, Aus helpdesk...... and it is definitely fit-for-purpose for me.
As always..... Caveat emptor
