Been looking around for a camper van such as the earlier Jayco Finch and owl and even the hard floor cubs, and I cant believe how much these are being sold for if in good condition, I am talking early to mid eighties, makes ones 4 to 5 years old not all the expensive, does anyone no why the early ones are so dear, are they better or what is it.
I agree, Red dog, old caravans seem to be priced quite high? We got a quote to trade-in our van and it had lost one-third of its value in 2 years! At that rate a newer van would be a far better buy.
Supply and demand, I guess. I got my old Freeway for a little less than 5 grand but I've seen them for sale by dealers asking twice as much in poor condition. Even so, new slide-ons cost an arm and a leg by comparison.
If you look at the prices of the equivalent in a new one, you may begin to see why the prices of old vans are still comparably high and if the old van is in good condition it is probably a better buy than the high priced rubbish that is coming out of the factory today, it is mainly all bling and no quality. If you do buy an old van all you will probably have to spend is new tyres and have the braking system reconditioned and you will be ok for another 5 to 10 years, possibly the external sealing of the van may need replacing. Cheers David
When we traded in our van to get this latest one,we had owned it 5 years and had been around Oz working in it for that amount of time and still $1000 more for it than we payed for it....But if i was going to update any time soon i would be looking to bring one in from o/s .The workman ship on vans today here in oz has a lot to be questioned about. They are over priced. But the c/ van industry can see there is a big demand out there, so demand dictates the $$$$.As you get around Oz and you see the older vans still on the road, is a testerment to how they were built, but in 20/30 years time there wont be many of the recentlely built ones still on the road....
They all want big money when you are buying & tell you that they all hold their value, thats until you try to trade them in & then the old story nobody wants them.
Go getters!!!
