The grey nomad attraction of travelling the Nullabour Plains and camping on the cliff tops is being progresively destroyed. Two people where parked on the cliffs at camp SA site 805 ( from camps book 5 ) when a grader arrived after having ripped out the roadway . The people flagged down the driver and asked if they were rebuilding the road. The answe was NO making it impassable.
As it costs the taxpayer around $15.000 to create each of these roads and National Parksare now progressively destroying them. Two former camp spots have been converted into photo opportunity stops., fencing off the ripped up camping areas. The rubbish bins are also being removed. All the original National Parks signage was ripped up and dumped.,and concrete slabs that were previously used to tow up and down the roadways to keep them smooth were also broken up and discarded.
The grader driver was asked ,why no signs had been posted closing the road or warning that it was to be destroyed .The answer was...National Parks had been there two or three days and it was their resposibility to post signs, but they had not done so. These people were left stranded as they had no hope of towing a c/ van over this ripped up Road. They did manage to get out the next day..No thanks to National Parks or the grader driver, A bulk tanker drove into the camp site over the ripped up road and back out again, and they were able to travel out in his wheel tracks.
Hopefully the affected people have some photo evidence and diary of date/time to accompany an official complaint. We all know that official complaints to these departments are futile unless one of the tv current affairs programmes gets involved. It would seem that Australia wide these outfits are administered by Hitler Youth Movement rejects and staffed largely by people who are only there because they failed th IQ test for the Woolworths trolley attendant job.
The dictatorial attitude of some departments is lamentable to say the least. I hope those campers follow through with their complaint. Meanwhile, at least we have these forums to vent our spleens and spread the word.
I am not going into National Parks any more ...been there done that. The more we visit these places the more the price goes up,as they think they are on another revenue maker. If people stayed away like they did in Victoria maybe then they might get some idea that we are sick of revenue pinching ...In Victoria although you do not pay to get in by gee they make it up from the poor bugger wanting to camp over in any of the parks that allow camping.I was also reading a interesting bit of info regarding if you want to have a' gathering' you have to submit for a permit to be granted.

i just use the app!!! bugger trying to keep up to date with a book that is almost out dated before it hits the shops, due to closures and so on.
With so much hoohaa going on about free /low cost camping the book will only contain a few pages in a few years time i am thinking .I laugh when i read the negs about free camping ,,free camping dosen't come free to us , to set up to live that way , it cost's $$$$ but the problem is those $$$$ are not going into c/ park owners pockets every time we hit the road, In some cases instead of say a full month of fees he may only get part of that ,but he is not happy with that situation he want it all. With us being able to free camp to do it as i say it dosnt just happen , we pay to get this way,the difference is c/ parks are not getting it some other industry is getting our money to travel in this low cost /free camp style.

Yes they have pic's of them stuck between where they are parked and the dozzer ripping the road up.They never got a chance to pull away before he started destroying the road in.So had no way of driving out while he was taking up all the road doing this. And yes have been in touch with the department concerned , and guess what !!! 9 months on and no word from any one .

herbie, if you stop going to NP's does that mean it will get cheaper for all of us?

I would like to say yes but i think it would need more than just me to stop useing them.If one has been into a lot of them i do not see any reason to keep going back, as on a lot of times that i have gone back into the same ones it is depressing to see how run down they have become from lack of maintance .T hought all these chages were supposed to go towards all the maintance.!!!!!! There still is a few places one can get to with out going into National Parks to marvel at. Iknow a bloke who has been on the road 20 years working all over and has not entered one National Park.He recons they are like staying in a caravan park ,,,one is owned if you start doing that. But he is a true die Ozzzzy.

Bugga, anybody want to buy me a copy of Camps 7? please
National Parks are now not really national parks for the people but areas of land set aside so the NP people can feel important and to have areas that can be covered in un-natural under growth so they can catch fire in an way that does not happen in a natural growth area that is left to nature. In nature a fire is started by lightening or similar and it burns the undergrowth and often does little damage to the top cover and most of our natural wild life can survive a natural burn but they cant survive the horrendous heat that now happens because of the excess of undergrowth that now exists in our parks.
A national park that is closed to public use should be left as nature dictates and when it catches fire it should be allowed to burn as nature dictates.
The big problem is that they let a few people in to look around a small area during the day or operate a default caravan park in a very same area so they can operate as they wish. Also people built houses in areas that are not suitable for human habitation. After the 2009 fires we say many houses that were built in areas that were very high danger areas. Saw houses where they were built on stilts over a steep cliff with trees underneath etc. Even saw one where a large tree was surrounded by the house so it had a natural chimney up through the centre of a wood house with glass windows highlighting the tree.
In over 4 years I only went into one national park and was very disappointed so have never had the urge to check out another.
I prefer to find a little spot away from the world and there I can take my photos of nature and the birds and animals that live there.
We will find that the cost to staying in NP will steadily increase as the push to remove all free and bush camping sites are removed.
I feel sorry for our families etc that would like to follow in our footsteps as I worry that they won't have the options that we have now even though we have a lot less options than our parents etc had not that many years ago.
Regards Brian
