Cooktown council in tropical qld have stated a $5 per night camp just out side of the town, but if you want to stay there iwould suggest you head there in the next 12 months, it is a trail run.But park owners are already up in arms over it.It has a 48hr stay limit.Has water / dump point.
Good on them, I knew there had been a problem between the council being heavy handed as in moving people on & the CBD business owners loosing business due to this fact. I believe it came to a head last year between the two parties & the business people stood their ground,We heard this while we were up there last year & looks like they may have a win for us all, so lets support them.

Yep, this whole business of CPs versus free (or cheap) camps will eventually come to a head with the small businesses in towns winning the argument in favor of low cost camping facilities for travellers. Money always talks loudest, and one or two CPs against 20 or 30 small businesses is a no contest.

I am not really up to speed with the goings on in Cooktown, but the story is a similar one around Oz.
Personally, i am all for Free Parking/Overnight staying if its NOT in a Caravan Park.... and i feel violated if i get charged or fined to park somewhere free in our great land.
Caravan Park owners or Accom owners should not even have a say in it..... A lot of people get away to do exactly that, GET AWAY, away from people!!!! So we dont want to park/sleep or camp in a park.
In my area, the Great Ocean Road, they tried to crack down on it years ago..... Parks Vic would hand out fines for those that parked over night. Signs went up sighting "No Camping" then got re worded to "No Parking Overnight"
And then the worst part, they no longer even enforce it...... On any given day, there are between 10 and 15 vans setting up at our beach front (in the middle of town), not too mention a few either side of town....
Personally i think we should be free to do as we choose.... If people leave a mess, then fine them..... Not every one wants to stay in a park.
I have no prior knowledge of the goings on in Cooktown... But i totally agree with some of the posters... $30 to stay in a park for the night is a bit rich, especially when we come self sufficient.
I understand that those with a 4WD and Caravan may be looked at differently and i do understand that..... In my mind, if you just take up the footprint of a single vehicle, you should be able to park/sleep where you like.

This will work in communities like cooktown , But not larger city has the local come into the picture more so caravan owners , Cooktown is a place worth visiting and I don't think the local caravan park could cope with all the visitors anyway .
Hello Brickie, just a heads up regarding the $5 camping in Cooktown QLD,In my post i mentioned about a 12 month trial,.Well mate if any one want's the $5 offer they want to head to Cooktown in the next 12 months. The caravan park owners up there are fumming over the council allowing this .C/park owners have already met to discuss (as they put it )battle tactic's!!!!! They are accusing the council of robbing them of business. The mayor's response was ..We consider it is paradise up hereand we are happy to to share it with those who want to make the long trip up here

I say three votes to the mayor , not many of them kind around or should i say , on the travelling public's side .
wow that is unreal, bet that dont last it amazes me when c/van parks charge you the price that they do,
yes i do understand that they have bills to pay as well but come on some are amazingly expensive, and for what its your own van, can you honestly say that like 30 a night and even more is what it costs for your power for a night and a shower?.
good on them most c/van parks should be about 15 dollars i say for a night and if no power but just to feel safe then 5 bucks it is i say.
i hope they win, five bucks is all i would like to pay for a night i have my own shower so its not like im using theres own stove the works ,its gas so what power am i using ? just lights .
There have been free camp out of town on your way into Cooktown The last time I was there this maybe upgraded camp . Cook town is well worth the visit good road and very laid back . Their are still plenty of people who will still use the parks if they are well run .Salty Dog we must follow the rules of the land and you just can't do what ever you like because you don't like the rules it is a free country that why we all have input into making the rules sometime it might not suit us
I'm all for following the rules brickies, doesn't mean i have to agree with them ;) Thats all i was saying.... Works both ways too.
I've been to places in Tassie where it says no camping, then when i went up and asked the local Police/Fishers Officer, he just laughed at me and said "we dont enforce that rubbish"
