Permit / Self registration

Spida, where are you seeing these signs ? in the free camps or national parks or state parks.

Have you thought what way you will head from the Mount? The Lime Stone Coast is a nice area to travel. Some nice places to see and camp.

Many times there is a box with an envelope holder. You fill it out and usually there is a small fee involved and then put it in the locked box. Most times it's just rego and contact details.

Permit required might mean its on Aboriginal land, or National park... enquire at the nearest Visitor centre first.

Self registration means when you arrive theres usually a big sign at the entrance to the campground with a bit of roof over it... you'll find envelopes with instructions as to how much to pay, fill out the form, put the money in, seal it and put into the locked box. Quite often there are volunteer rangers that come around popular national park campgrounds around tea-time, and they'll collect money and registration forms.

(Note to self.. make sure have variety of cash)

What kind of cash are we talking about here? Fives, tens, twenties? Coins?

Depends - some of these require $5 per person or $12 per family as an example - things like that - usually not a lot of money involved.

Ormiston Gorge campground was $13.60 per night for 2 people. Friendly volunteer rangers came round with plenty of change!
We thought it was very good value, fantastic area, good clean amenities with solar heated showers and loos.

We stayed in several of these "permit required" camp sites in SA, particularly on Yorke Peninsula.  Some only require a permit (free) and some require a permit + payment.  Payment is usually $35.00 per week or $10.00 per night.  If you purchase a weekly permit, you can move from one camp to another.  Rangers do come and check.  The reason you need a permit even in the free camp is due to the risk of fires, so the officials like to know who is where, just in case there are fires and they have to evacuate.

Permits can be bought from the local stores on the peninsula, along with the Tourist Information Centre at Minlaton.  Can't comment on other areas of SA, apart from National Park,s which are clearly sign posted, and self registration is required.  Local Tourist Information centres can give you all the info, alternatively go to the SA national parks web site, where all is explained.

Thank you everyone. I am travelling up from Mt Gambier towards Adelaide and many of the 'free camps' in the bible say permit required so I just didnt want to turn up then find I had to drive back to somewhere to get the 'permit'. Was not sure if it was a National Park thing and whether I needed to go to somewhere in a town - or online to get the permit.
Really appreciate all the helpful comments - thank you

PS - at Black ****atoo -Bush camp  $8 pn. Huge area, some with trees, very clean flush loos in basic building, hot showers - also basic corrugated iron. Caretakers on site.
