Booking CP in Broome

Just read the GN news story of the day and as we are planning to head up to Broome around early May next year was wondering how far in advance of our expected arrival I need to book a spot. What recommendations do people have for camping with a camper trailer in Broome and surroundings. Thanks in advance Griff

If you will be arriving in Broome in May, you will be a little ahead of the really busy time. However, I would suggest you book as soon as you can be definite about when you will be arriving - even if that is only a few days ahead.

If your rig is 4WD - i.e. can stand up to corrugations etc - suggest you head up the Dampier Peninsula to Middle Lagoon. Beautiful spot. Is campground there run by local family.

Another interesting place to stay is Barn Hill, south of Broome. Great coastal formations and beautiful view across the bay to Broome. It is a cattle property with an increasingly popular camping ground.

I ended up at Roebuck Roadhouse - nice spot and cheaper than Broome. Short drive to get there.

If you are there in early may you might be able to time it for the 'Stairway to the moon' which I believe happens on the 9th May this year.

We were there 2 years ago also in May and stayed at Roebuck Bay Caravan Park and had a spot right on the edge of the water with a 5 minute walk to the main viewing spot to see the event in Broome. The caravan park was a good one and we enjoyed our stay. We booked, from memory about a week beforehand  and there were many spaces vacant but, by the time we left, about a week later, the park was filling up fast with the migrating southerners for the season.

We had a thoroughly good time in Broome.

Cheers

Jon

Unless the Broome c/ parks have changed the way they did their bookings for peek time , when we were there it was line up at the enterance and see if you are one of the lucky one's to get a site after 10am. when who ever may be pulling out.Did do bookings for people who reside in WA and book from year to year for that particular time ....And no pets are not welcome in Broome.

There are a lot of people who say to give Broome a miss cos its expensive, also none of the caravan parks there accept pets. We got a spot for 3 days with a weeks notice in July, found the "regulars clique" very unfriendly... if you can get there before them it would be better. We loved Broome though, plenty to do, lots of local history, some of it very disturbing. 3 days wasnt enough so we went out to the "Bird Observatory" for a week.... bit of a drive out of town, but quiet and very enjoyable place to stay.

Many thanks for your suggestions, we're quite happy to bush camp as much as possible but by the time we get to Broome we'll need a couple of days in a CP or motel to freshen up. Hadn't considered going too far south of town as we want to head up the peninsular then across the Gibb so Barn Hill and Roebuck sound great. We have to be in Darwin beginning of July so are quite flexible up till then.

Cheers Griff
