I am constantly amazed by the number of bikes that we see lying in the bush beside the road as we tour the country.
Fallen off the back of a RV?
Can never find a safe place to pull over & check them out & SWMBO won't let me pick up anymore 'junk' in any case.
I suppose that the message is that the bike rack that might be OK on the back of the car round the 'burbs', probably won't last on the back of the van bouncing round Oz.
My bike sits in the back of the Patrol rather than lug around the never used back seats.
I'd be very wary of anything that sits on top of a goose neck extension ... Just think of the physics of the set up. Without really good design, top class material & supported good welding methods the 'lever' effect will win out and result in unfortunate consequences.

Our tow vehicle is Ford Ranger twin cab ute and we want to carry two bikes. Anyone know of any bike racks that can go on tow bar but you can still tow the caravan.
i guess the next option is carry on the back of the van... Did find a nifty bike rack that hooks over the spare wheel and thought maybe we could do that on the caravan spare on back of the van. Unfortunately that will add a bit more length to the rig!!
or... Has anyone got a special device made up for such a thing. If so, do you know anywhere in Brisbane we could do this?
oh yeah.. We do have a Hayman Reece stabiliser attached. Cheers!
When you do decide where to put your bike rack just make sure you don't obscure your number plate ,as the law dosn't allow that and also if you go through a toll road we found the camera cant read obscured number plates.
Our bike rack attaches to the bumper bar on the back of the van but once when our son used it there was a mark left on the van. Hasn't happened with us though.
When we got our van we bought a bike rack that would normally go on the back of a car and put it on the back of the van. Took our bikes on our 2 month shake-down trip and used them once. The rack was a major pain on the back of the van as it made the rig longer and we had to often take it off before we could get onto a site. The bikes got battered about, the brake cable broken through on both of them. Obviously the rack, although reasonably expensive and presumably fine for the back of a car wasn't at all suitable for the back of a van, presumably as Cupie said the movement is much bigger.
Needless to say when we actually set off 4 years ago for the big lap the bikes didn't come with us.
we had ours on the spare tyre at the back of the van, travelled the gibb river road, savannah way in the gulf and many other rough tracks, never lost our bikes, had to keep cleaning them though. there is only one reason that they fall off.
