Prado on Petrol/Gas problem

Hi all, just thought I would put this question out there.

I have a 1998 V6 Toyota Prado on Gas/Petrol and I am having trouble changing from petrol to gas. Usually the system starts on petrol and changes automatically to gas within seconds. I am having trouble with the gas side of things.

For some time time now when I pull up at night I have to manually change to petrol then in the morning after I start the car, manually change to gas after a few minutes. Since the warmer weather is with us here in Victoria, most of the time I can't get it to change from petrol to gas at all! on the occasion it will but then I stop and maybe half hour later go to start and won't start on gas.

It's just like the gas evaporates from the line.

Any ideas please??

hi Dougwe, I'm no gas expert but are you using more gas than usual? could be a small leak, perhaps somebody with more info will come in later.

Sounds very much like a dirty/sticky gas valve. Every now and then there seems to be a batch of dirty gas around, something to do with the propane/butane mix, this gas deposits a sticky black tar like stuff in converter and on the gas vale ( in the converter) Repair/clean out should only be dome by a qualified LPG fitter. Could also just be a bad connection on changeover switch.

Hi Doug I also run on LPG and have for the last 10 years, in the past have had a few minor issues including very slow change over from petrol to gas dont know what caused it but had it serviced by qualified LPG tradesman and do follow up services every 12 months and no longer experience problems. The LPG guy recommended having it serviced every 20000 klm at a cost of about $90.00 I have found this works well, good luck getting it sorted

When our Corolla Seca was a bit low on Radiator Fluid, the Seca would cut out when changing gears, water was not geting to the converter, topped the radiator up and no problems. is there a kink in your water line to the converter, or low radiator fluid.

How things happen!

After posting the previous comment I got a phone call at 9.00 am this morning asking if I would like to bring my car in today, off course I said no problem but was 1.5 hours away, so off I headed.

After 30 mins of them looking at the gas system they found electrical terminals faulty and gas mixture system is connected the wrong way and the wrong one so the parts are ordered and back I go in the morning so all going well this time tomorrow the gas system should be all aok.

This all goes back to that idiot mechanic 12 months ago when they took the motor apart. Oh well, them's the breaks. As long as it's fixed all is fine.

I am not sure how I am going to fill in time but that's only minor. Might have to hang around the shopping centre near them just like the kids do. Might leave the credit card at home though.

Well, problem fixed. Two days and $900.00 later I now have a new mixer and converter. It was said the system was actually not the correct one for the Prado. Due to the system being fitted prior to the people I purchased it from, There is nothing I can do about it.

Still, all is good now so that's all that matters.

Geeee, my slush fund has been hit hard lately.
