Moving and staying current with the relos etc.

Still getting everything together before I can exit the house and enter the road and some of what I need is info but there is also another side.

I work in I.T. and have done so for a very long time now. I am actually in what some call "in the trenches" more than the higher side of I.T. Eg, if a virus is brand new, I am more likely to be exposed to it among the first people than not because that is part of my job. This is a useful talent for "on the road" because I can set up any I.T. oriented device, TV etc without a problem and if my own laptop or Ipad device or other device similar to an Ipad or even Smart phone breaks down between towns, I can pull up at the next town big enough to have a shop where I can buy or order parts and have them sent to me. Obviously it depends on the breakdown as some breakdowns of I.T. devices make the device fit to be a door stop or if big enough, even a chock for the caravan wheels! ;-} In those cases, forget the device, go get another.

While I can do those things there are a lot of us who cannot. I am an "OK" electrician though not a real electrician so if it gets too much for me, I get a professional in. So I am intending to attempt to make some sort of money by doing "computer related" stuff on the way if possible. Your computer, your pad, your smart phone etc, yout TV maybe. Fix what can be fixed and if the thing is just dead and you should buy something new, then I dont intend on charging for something I cant honestly fix unless you want me to divert to where you are and it is a bit of a drive.

Would that be useful to anyone reading this? See, not only do I do whatever is needed to keep the ailing computer running, I do web sites and such. It may sound odd to some of you that someone not too far off doing the tour would be able to do that sort of thing but everyone has something that really is what they were meant to do and I.T. was always that thing for me. I was born too early I guess! ;-}

So, any opinion would be great and here's a tip - keep a close eye on Samsung's OLED. Basically it is a display that can be as thick as a sheet of plastic (it isnt actually that!) and show anything you like in high definition. The size of it can be larger than wide screen or small enough to be a phone. In fact they had already made a phone just for the fun of it that is a cylinder with a pull out handle that unfurls the OLED display and you can see the person video calling you. This looks like the "quiet achiever" to me at this moment.

Welcome from me Greg, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I reckon you should put a sign out front of your rig when set up, I for one would be a customer. I have recently got a iPad 2 and reasonably happy with it but at the same time find a few things annoying i.e. words coming up I haven't typed and can't seem to work out how to get photos of my older SLR Cannon camera onto the iPad the camera has the older style Smart Media Card.

Still, I will keep on keeping on with it.

My advise for any IT person is to NEVER disclose that at a rest stop.

ALWAYS a baker, butcher a chicken sexer.

NEVER have ANY experience with IT or you will never get to have a drink or 5 minutes rest.

The computers will come out of the wood work, "can you just look at this or that for me while WE have a drink"

I spend my last working time working with systems for large businesses doing software and hardware instals but always say I was a fisherman when first joining a group. I did spend 18 years on trawlers so i do know the subject.

My trade is a sign writer but that is a bit dangerous also as there is always someone wanting a name etc on their rig so that only comes out after I am comfortable with the people I am with.

You will have to be VERY forceful and state that you ONLY look when there is money involved. eg my business is IT and I charge for work done the same as you do when you are working.

I know that is hard to do but it is your choice.

Anyway wish you luck in your travels and hope that you get the work you need and also the fun you deserve.

There is work out bush if your excel and word skills are up to date or rural software is big in the bush.

Regards
Brian

Welcome to the forum Greg.
You will be inundated everywhere you go! Make sure, like doctors, you make appointments and charge for your time or you'll never get any time for yourself. I would be a customer right now!

Just a pick up on your comment re OLED. Nokia put out a three way fold OLED screen on a phone in '98.Hi Def and very robust.

As with a lot of technology there was extreme pressure to can the technology until  the "Investment" in previous screens paid it's way. Nokia folded and look at Nokia now, from a market leader to an also ran.

Tecnically you could buy an OLED screen like a roll of carpet and just have TV box for all the electronics. Imagine your whole wall as a TV screen in ultra Hi Def.

Same with LED TV's,until the Investment in Plasma paid off the LED TV's were held back.

I am glad Samsung have decided to introduce the technology,we should have had it years ago.

Imagine the future with it,those magnetic stick on signs with a TV screen to advertise your business stuck on the side of your van/truck.

Imagine the council buses showing  video adverts instead of those full painted adverts.

Crashes galore.

I'm sure if you posted on the forum where you are then we could PM you for an appointment - I'm sure some would make an effort to get there. Good luck - like the idea of a working holiday.
