First trip

Hi everyone

I am finally setting off for my first trip only short but I hope to get the feel of how I will go in the future.

A group of my work mates and I are going to Abercrombie caves for the weekend of 1-3 March

They are camping out and I am taking my van to see how I go any one who would like to join us is

more than welcome it on the road between crookwell and bathurst nsw seems like a lovely spot

and I intend to make the most of it, what do they say silence is golden gee I can't wait looking forward to the experience

Have a great weekend Marto... but take care on that road into Abercrombie Caves, its gravel, steep and winding. Unless you are experienced with towing your caravan it could be a challenge. Its a couple of years since we were there, but we only took the tent for that trip, left the caravan behind.

Thanks gerty but I did check with their web site and they say there is only 10 Km of good gravel from goulburn and usually kept in good shape and the rest is tar and suitable for all vehicles maybe I will give them a call

I was about 20 when I visited Wombeyan caves with a group of friends. We descended a sink hole, went through a couple of caverns and came across a narrow tunnel. We chose the smallest guy, tied a rope to his ankles and sent him head-first through the tunnel to see what was on the other side. He barely had enough room to shoulder his way through. Then we heard him yell the "all clear" and took turns inching our way on our stomachs through the tunnel which led to a large cavern. Then one of the guys became claustrophobic and we had to turn back. I can't believe I did that! Even now, almost 50 years later, I shudder to think I inched my way through a space barely wide and high enough for me to fit, probably 100 meters below ground level. Never again! I guess the only reason I didn't freak was because I was so fascinated by everything around me, I didn't really think about the danger. I remember taking photos of the experience but they've since been lost. Pity.

Very wise to check with the locals Marto, my memory of that trip might be a bit shaky, we went to Wombeyan caves in the same trip, the road to there was gravel too.

Wow! Sounds really scary. Kids still do scary things like that and nowadays we say how irresponsible they are! Nowadays at Wombeyan they have guided tours, with lights and handrails... but the tour we did included over 400 steps!
Abercrombie caves are self-guided, with lights, handrails, and signs. In the past they used to hold dances, weddings etc there near the upening, Beautiful spot.

There si no way we would take a van down that road, especially going down as you are on the outside! Scarey stuff. We camped at Carcoar & did day trips around the areas.

Hi guys

Thanks for your replys but there is a huge difference in the road to wombeyan caves and Abercrombie caves I live in the area and have been on the wombeyan caves road I had a look on google earth and there seems to be patches of gravel from Binda to Abercrombie yes it is mountainous country but I am not in a hurry to get there , the site says it kept in good condition but I will phone on monday anyway ,the road from Bathurst to Abercrombie I believe is tarred all the way

regards
