Good call peter when I head off for the first time later this year there will be no mod cons for me as I have gathered from others here less is great I would like to experience the real pleasure people have in camping free maybe its a dream and it may not happen but I intend to give it a go
Would love to always use a camp oven whenever I went anywhere. Problem is, you can't always have a fire to get the ashes. I tried with heat beads and nearly got fined because it is classed as a fire! Only way was a Cobb, so I bought one. Not a camp oven, but a good, lighter substitute, compared to the comparable camp oven made of cast iron. Also can hide it away on days of total fire ban, like in the camp kitchen and even once in the laundry.
You can also get that smoky taste by chucking a few wood chips on the beads!

Ok then, I admit It, I must be a mouse, well big rat really. I just had some lovely Lamb Ribs cooked on my Baby Q with a side salad and a stubby, very nice. I love my Q. My mate the Q even sits on the back seat of the Prado and has his seat belt on as well.
Oh! did I say I love my Q :)

I'm with you Doug, luuuuuuv the Q. There is definitely a time and place for the camp oven I agree but having been a scout mum, assistant venturer leader and cooking for the hoards over many years why create work unnessarily. You can heat it up while you prep the meat, pop it on and sit down and have happy hour while you wait and have a beautifully cooked anything really. No mess, no fire risk no burning yourself checking the progress of the meal and it's a lot quicker. Living on the farm for 25 yrs and only having a fuel stove and a bar b q which I used most nights could never understand why blokes have to spend so much time standing around the thing ???? I would put my meat/ fish on, go inside and do everything else to prepare the meal, nick out and check occasionally then go out and bring it in. All good really. Silly me..... How would you ever get through all those tinnies if you didn't stand there and drink and Talk c...!!
Camp ovens can make a beautiful meal, can be a bit difficult in wet and windy weather though. The Weber is always ready to go. Pizza in a Weber is fab! easy and quick, Camp oven pizza?

I've decided to go with a collapsible stove-top oven. Bake in all weather, inside or out. Folds away for easy storage when not required. Tweezy. And only about 80 bucks.
Love the idea of a camp oven, but with only me it's a bit of a hassle to be bothered to build a fire etc. I do, however, have a small portable BBQ with a lid which can do a roast, casserole etc with lid closed or BBQ with it oened out. It also provides a nice easy fire for one or two without any hassles and just a few bits of 3x2 or heatbeads etc. Also in places where fires aren't allowed I've asked the ranger(s) and always been allowed to use it as it is enclosed. I never leave it unattended if I have to just close the lid and no problems.
