All this talk about drugs in Sport - most of us grey nomads took performance enhancing drugs every day back in the old days - it was called 'beer' - I remember a good mate of mine played one of his greatest games of Rugby Union one day when he was as 'drunk as a skunk' - we just told him to tackle anything or run at anything that didn't have the same coloured jumper as ours.
now-days elite sportsmen are taking performance enhancing drugs to try to get a competitive edge. At my stage in life I simply need them to try to get to tomorrow.

It seems to all go back to the percieved NEED to win; with all else deemed 'failure'....even 'second place' is not good enough (eg think Olympics silver medallists).
Athletes are viewed by almost all others according to their success (indeed, most view themselves the same way too nowdays) and, being 'only human' this tempts and twists an otherwise fair-play sense. Pressure from sponsors, contracts, media, fans, peers, highstakes gambling....its all part of the toxic mix IMHO.
This is truly a shame really.... it wasnt that long ago when 'best and fairest' were complimentary traits in sport AND participation/effort was appreciated too.
Now very much not so.

They've been there for a long time. As a middle distance runner when I was in my teens, I was offered stuff to improve my performance. That was in the early seventies, and doesn't that make me feel old, thank god for that little blue tablet for the years to come that may improve my enhancement!
Seriously, I never touched the stuff, steroids, etc. I found young girls, cigarettes and alcohol. That was enough to kill my olympic hopes!
