I like my Navlady, she always is telling me where to go and I often tell her where to go too. Seriously, I like my Navman My80.

My first navigator was a HP PDA with Tom Tom, PDA had windows so ran Ozi explorer and Hema desert tracks. An old fart driving up the centre road_ Tom Tom in the back ground Slim dusty singing and desert tracks on the screen, how good was that. sadly HP died RIP. now use evelbay chinese about $70 to 80.00 with windows, not as good but works well.  ( doesn't say, recalculating recalculating recalculating.)

Purchased a new Garmin 1490T tow years ago, have nevr been lost more in my life. A heap of trash, cost $399, got home after one trip from Tasmania to Queensland, put it on ebay for $100 and now some other poor undortunate owns it.

Purchased an Uniden Trax 5000 and could not be happier.

We have had LG, Samsung, Garmin, Navman and built in Sensis one's. Garmin the only one I would never own againn.

We're using a Uniden and happy with it. Chose it because it has the USB hole on side not at the bottom. Navman had it there and it got bent.

Most Uniden GPS units use IGO 8 as the GPS engine,(or they used to)it's about the best system I have found so far,for general,"put me at their front door"

Oziexplorer, for the off road people,is second to none.

There are only 2 gps road maps used in Australia

1 is Sensis Maps by Telstra, great for the major Towns, and Cities, its called Sensis where is,

some people call it "where the hell am I"

2 is Navtech maps, great for the Country Areas, I live in a Country Area, and the bloody thing shows me some roads from 40 years ago.......Not there now.

It really is about how the Navigation Engine, displays those maps, and gives you directions

To Me,IGO 8,is about the best...I have tried a few, since they became available

They all take a bit of getting used to,although Fantastic Technology, they can get you lost as well

unless you have a back up road map too, usually, not needed, but good insurance.

I have two old GPS units which are fully functional, and I could get a third from my brother. However, none of them have updated maps, and even if they were available, the maps would cost more than a new unit.

Needless to say I've had enough of these ripoffs so I'm looking to find a tablet PC, say 7" or 10", with a built-in GPS. I can download free up-to-date maps from Google Maps, so the problem then becomes one of Internet access.

Has anyone done this, or investigated the possibility?

To see what navigators the CAW POIs easily fit go to this site. POIs for CAW 7 are now available. If your navigator model is not listed you will probably find a conversion App to convert one of the other type files.

I bought a Uniden trax500 and found it useless for me as I use many of my own files for POI that I create in excel.

In my old garmin it is very easy and I can also add to most others as I have loaded to Navman and Tom Tom but I cant even get the Uniden to be recognised by my computer so perhaps I have a dud but I get no response from Uniden even after many request for info etc.

I am now in the market for a 7" model that will enable me to see the directions while driving the bus. I am looking at the Garmin truck but not sure of the software as it is different but cant find anyone with one to advise.

Also looking at a couple of ebay specials and I have the latest IGO software so will load that if I am not happy with what it comes with.

Regards
Brian
