The latest Grass Roots magazine has some Icecream recipes that might be useful for you Milo. My friend has it, and I'm going to get one myself in a day or two. Might try and scan them, and put them on the "What's Cooking" Thread in a few days.
Hi milo. I am a diabetic type 2, the same as you,i was diagnosed with it six years ago. I have no differculty at all managing it, nor will you i am sure. There are a couple of key points that have made things easier for me to manage things.
Just as johnno02 has perfectly pointed out life shouldn't have to change all that much. Its a case of all things in moderation. The next advice i would give is surround yourself with expert help and educate yourself. You mentioned that you were going to see a dietitian, great start! Many people think they are a bit of a waist of time but let me tell you my experience is that they are fabulous help. Like i said the key is self education. Try and see if you can make monthly bookings with them for a little while, the result may well be better eating, better health and feeling 100% better than than you thought possible.
Its no real drama type 2 milo, you just have a little learnig to do.
Watermelon should not be eaten at all by diabetics or people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Watermelon is difficult to be broken down in the bowel. I happened to be discussing it with my Diabetic specialist the other day.
It is not always the sugar in the food but the fat content. I use ordinary icecream but if you have it with fruit it helps lower the GI count.

Milo Don't worry about it! It is only diabetes. Not a death sentence! As John said, eat anything (within reason) just use moderation! Oh and the banana ice cream....NO! Bananas have the highest sugar count in fruits! The first thing dietician said to me when I was diagnosed is only ever eat half a banana at a time as they have too much sugar! But seriously, milo... Don't stress about your new diagnosis...you likely to live another 30 yrs without too much problem if you exercise and keep those high carb treats to occasional treats. Go google diabetes info. It will give you some guidelines to what you can eat. The diagnosis today is much easier than 30 yrs ago when they knew so little about it. Then you were told you could never eat another lolly in your life! You can...just not a whole packet unless you can jab some insulin into yourself! So..chill...go camping! Before winter finds us!!
I have a feeling watermelon should be eaten in moderation too, is that right. Just remember a friend years ago sayng she couldn't eat it as she had diabetes.
Have also heard cut out potatoes and replace with sweet potato.
You are going to have to start reading the ingredients on the back of ALL packets of food. Light does not mean low sugar or low fat. It is usually one or the other. That one says low fat....so now look at the carbohydrate contents. Look at the bit that says 100ml or mg serve. That makes it easier to work out the percentage. If it says 45gms/100mls that means that 45% of each mouthful you eat has carbohydrates in it...that is a pile of carbs to work off!! Good luck Milo...you will get the hang of this. Doesnt mean you cant eat it, just means the rest of your meal needs to be low in carbs or your blood sugar will rise. If you then want to go for a run around the block you can eat your ice cream!! lol
Yes,I thought the same as you 30 odd years ago,I can only speak from experience,as an Insulin
Dependant Diabetic.
The Doctors, and Nurses,at the Hospital I was in, frightened the crap out of me at first,
and in those days, there was no internet,or great helpful forums, like this one to refer to.
Basically, most non Diabetic people have 3 decent sized meals a Day.
If you are on any assistance to your own Insulin Production, then you need 5 Small
meals a day.
This means smaller portions, spaced at intervals to feed the "helper" (tablets or Insulin)
You do need carbohydrates,to a certain extent,to feed this helper.
As Explained to me,Diabetes is the loss of production of the Pancreas,to produce Normal Insulin.
So when a non Diabetic, eats something, their body goes "squirt",with just the right amount of Insulin,to allow this to open the blood cells to take in this sugar,Which is what keeps us all alive.
The Diabetic's Pancreas get lazy, and dont provide, the right amount of Insulin to do the job
Depending on your age, etc, the "help" needed is different, some people need just Tablets,
Some need Insulin.
Usually, the younger the Diabetic, the more severe the Problem.
Imagine,no matter what you eat, even if its a handful of grass,it will convert to blood sugar,
we need blood sugar to keep us alive, the Insulin acts as a key,to open our cells, and allow the blood sugar to enter, and do what it does.
Without Insulin, the sugar from our foods, just runs around in our system, not doing the body, any good at all.
There is no need to stress over your Diabetes, just keep an eye,on what you are eating, and really reduce anything high in sugar,
Just in case you think,I am very strict with my diet,10 years, before I became Insulin Dependant
I used to drink 4,or 5 Home Made Beers,a night after tea...............Still do
Hope I have been of some help, just remember,Moderation,Moderation,Moderation,
Yep...what John says. Its really not a biggie these days. I drink diet drinks....and vodka!! :) It is kinda scary at first but dont worry too much. You arent gonna die straight away!! :) Diabetes takes about 20yrs or so to kill ya!!! Plenty more camping to be done in that time!!! :)
Thanks guys, I think like you are all saying, it's quite a big shock to the system! Also I do walks around where I live, Usually about 1k by the time I get back, my legs are like jelly!! I used to walk twice a day when I had Ben the border collie dog, But the last couple years have been les motivated to do so.. As in my other post in the health part, I never have been a big junk food eater, I love pasta though, Ie the packet ravioli , or those spiral pasta and the sauce you can buy to go with it And ice cream was only on movie nights.. I think soft drinks were my problem I might limit a Pepsi max for my movie nights too, At the moment drinking diet cordial with mostly water... I'm so lucky so far just have to take the tablets..
I have been told Im on the border line and my daughter gave me these recipe books To Good to be True by Annette Sym the lady lost huge amount of weight and the books are recommended by the Diabetes Ass and some of the recipes are mouth watering I think they are about $11 at the newsagents we worth buying
