Buying a motorhome in NSW

I have received the inspection report and it was all good. I live in Victoria, and also have a house in NSW where my son lives.  Does anyone know if when my son collects it can it be can transferred to my name or will it have to be in his name and then transferred later when the rego is due in October, by that time I will have it in Victoria.  Also will insurance have to be in his name or can I insure it.

Thanks

Buying a van in NSW

You can have the Van and Insurance in your name, just use your son's address as your own. If you register in your son's name now and transfer to your name in October, you'll have double transfer costs to pay. A lot depends on the transfer costs, also which State will be the cheapest to register in, NSW or Victoria. Whichever State you register in, there is usually a question about where the vehicle will be garaged. You can tell a little white lie. I say a little white lie because the Van could really be anywhere. You might even be touring in Queensland for 6 months.

In Vic. Rego is $38
In NSW rego is around $400 for a dual wheel unless you can produce a Pension card that gives a NSW address then it is free. Provided you do not have another vehicle Under the pension.
I suggest you pick the van up get it home then change it all to your Vic address including insurance.
Remember the police now have number plate recognition camera's.

Cheers Dodg.

Rego for our van in Victoria is $46.50. The certificate shows nil amount for insurance or TAC charge.

NSW rego is determined by weight, A 20ft van is the same rego cost as a large 4x4. There is no green slip required for a van as it's covered by the tug.

As stated above , if you have a pension card then you can have either one car or one van free of rego costs.

As you have said its a motor home, so in NSW you will have a green slip cost plus a rego determined by the weight of the motor home.

Also at renewall time you will have a road worthy as well, about $30/35.

There is a difference between a caravan and a Motorhome for registration purposes.. I have an Iveco Motor Home. Tasmanian cost all up is $700.20 without any Pension discount. However I found out that if I have it declared as a Motorhome and not a Van that has been made into a motorhome, I can get the rego and TP insurance down to a total of $590.00. I'm working on that now...

We bought the Terios (to flat tow behind Coaster) from dealer in SA. Husband collected it in Adelaide - there was no problem with naming me as the new owner on the papers, even though I wasn't there. He drove it back to Melbourne where we changed the rego from SA to Vic - needed a RWC to do that. Had to pay stamp duty to Vicroads as well as rego fee.

I presume the basic process for your motorhome would be similar.

Hi Barina, I have last week purchased my first motorhome , the rego transfer is killer in nsw up to $45000 you pay 3% over that is 5% , for my $94.000 van i am paying around $3.800 which i think is a rip off most of it goes to taxes with the actual transfer being bugger all, but what can you do! Happy & safe travel Wardy
