I've have had my Engel for at least 15 years without any problems, its now quiet noisy for a few hours after starting up after not being used for a while but still works fine, when it comes time to replace it which is the is the better fridge Engel or Waco ?

In my humble opinion I prefer the Engel, the whole thing comes across as well built, well engineered and if you got 15 years out of your last one I wouldn't hesitate to stay with the brand.

With modern stuff I think a lot of it is good and the technology might be whizz bang however it seems that with computer design everything is as thin as possible or made to tolerances that will do. Not like the older stuff that was built to last and last.

I think the Engel still does that, not so happy with my Waeco, all plastic and not so robust.

Cheers

Trevor

Engel may be expensive but they have a great reputation, friend of mine has an Engel over 20 years old and still going strong.

our 30yr old engel was hard on power so decided to upgrade - compared Engel amd Waaco but as the Engel drew less power that's the way we went - on special it was only marginally more expensive than the equivalent Waaco.

 Hi

Obviously another miricle fridgeno

Average power 40W,  WHAT does that realy mean???

If it average 40W over 24HRS.it cannot be average current draw  of  0.7Amps x 24hrs = 17Ahrs

Do not believe any claim as THAT  to be a practical daily Amphr consumption!!!

40W for 24hr =80Ahrs

Usual daily consumption of these types of fridges can range from around 25Amphrs to 100Amp hrs dependig on: "

[1] Ambient temp around the fridge

[2]Thermostat setting

[3]Warm loadings

[4] condensor cooling

[5]being a chest type ,to a lessor extent, opening frequency & time.

Peter

Waeco are plastic, if they are subjected to the sun the lid buckles & wont seal. The touch control panel that is mounted at the top also distorts & this leads to the unit changing temps,  switches from fridge to freeze or any where in between as well as off. Dont own one but have seen this happen.

Lawson - stick with your Engel.  I have 2 - 1 is in my Commodore wagon - purchased it in Jul 1976 for $182.38 still have original receipt and warranty - has never been regassed just one visit to the repairman for a dry solder.  Other one in my cruiser purchased about 3 years ago - dealer said it won't last as long as my original.  Larry

I have used an Engel for 13 years and for 10 of that as a constantly running bar fridge.

Only problems were lightning strike (Insurance job) & some surface rust due to careless handling.  Resprayed and all good.  It is a little bit noisy if outside an open window at night.

I think that I'd stay with what I know ...  power consumption not an issue for me as I don't bush camp very often.   The price difference spread over an expected life of 15 years or more is a non issue for me.

Daughter's Waco goes OK too but she does have issues with regulating the fridge freezer compartmentalisation.
