Yep I think I am too ,did read somewhere that you should only buy the one with min of 30% active ingrediant, which we use, found that anything less didn't keep the smell down, I still feel in the hot weather that I need something in the top tank other than a chemical

Why not try Dettol or Eucalptus oil. I use a spray bottle with dettol or eucalyptus and water to spray the bowl.

I've been using Bio-Magic for the last 10 years, organic and can be emptied into any septic or toilet system without any adverse effect, great product, expensive though.

Pine o Clean  eucalyptus works well (the green bottle) - about $5 a bottle and Ok in all toilets. About 80 ml to our 15l tank is fine. Kills odours Ok, change a bit more frequently in40c heat though like most of them.

I am now watching this thread with interest, new to the portable toilet thing and was told not to use Nappy San as it does not break down human waste, only strips it out of nappies!

Only other alternative is a dry dunny with phenyl and wood ash, and yes, I can still rememeber the night men and I am only nearly 55!

Just stick to the Homebrands from Coles, Woolies, Aldi or Reject shop, these are only sodium percarbonate usually states on label 34%.

The branded products also have sodium percarbonate but also seem to have other additions which for some reason don't seem to work as well in toilets.

If you are looking for more info just google, sodium percarbonate there is a wealth of information.

I just throw capful or two into the porta potti toss in a bit of water and give it a shake, if it starts to get on the nose just toss a bit more in, works for us, and my job of emptying is so much easier, rarely any smell.

Newbies to caravanning. So, with the Napisan (or cheap version) do you have to dissolve it first? What ratio? How much do we put into the tank?
Thanks for your advice!!

Not sure how many you'll find if you do a Search, but there have been so many posts advocating the use of home-brand Napi-san, that it's not funny.

Use the Search button.

Cheers,

Sheba.

I use 2 capfuls to about a lt of hot water be careful to disolve it in a regular bucket as when you put it into warm to hot water it will froth up big time, disolve it and then tip it into the toilet , if we are stationary for more than a day or so I will open the outside trap door on the van and give my casset a good shake to move the contents around as the paper tends to pile up like a pyramid (I only use thetford paper) regular paper I find does not break down as well ,so shaking the cassete around a bit helps to move it around, nappy san does disolve everything with no smell sometimes when it is getting a bit full in the very hot weather I just feel I would like to have some sort of fresher fragrance yes I do put an extra capful if I feel I need it, on emptying if you keep it moving around it will disolve everything and a cuple of flushes with the hose and clean as a whistle the nappy san actually does keep the inside of the cassets free of build up and like new.

Well my two bobs worth.

We use two caps of Wollies Home Brand Nappy San. Dissolve two caps in a bucket of warm water and pour into the holding tank. Before putting the contents in the tank however we put a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid, and then add a decent hit of eucalyptus spray. End result no smell, and no mould withing the tank.

Have used Bio Magic, but will agree to all, very expensive.

Cheers and beers

Isn't Pino-Clean and eulalyptus a killer of bacteria?

If I am right then it isn't wise to use it in your porta potties if you, at any time empty them into septic waste tanks (which we found in abundance in our travels).

Septic tanks work by bacteria breaking down the waste.

Cheers

Jon

I use Biomagic on the garden as a fertilizer, it's an organic accelerator and not a chemical, any of the nappysan or disinfectants type materials are bacterial killers and can't go into composting or enzyme type toilets with killing them and that why all composting, long drop type toilet say don't empty cassette toilet into them because you are destroying the bacterial action in those toilets. just copy and paste the link.

P.S. sorry Sheba it still doesn't work.

There seems to be no information re Bio Magic as to exactly what it contains you just have to take, what the manufacturer says about there product, as fact, if you read the MDS there is just the claim that it is a proprietry product, what it contains is secret.
There is plenty of information about Sodium Percarbonate and it is perfectly safe in septics, it is an oxygen activator.

Agree! Sodium Percarbonate is the main ingredient in nappy wash products hence Nappy wash products are safe for septics. Seems a no-brainer too me. confuse.gif

Yep - home brand nappy soaker - I just put a capful in when we have emptied and cleaned it, then depends on usage - sometimes another capful, also a drop of eucalyptis oil swipe around bowl, on a piece of loo paper, and drop into the storage tank - nice fresh smell, and all working away down there.

I use vinegar. Just ordinary home brand white vinegar. About 2 of the black water tank caps full of water and an equal quantity of vinegar. If the loo does get a bit smelly (like with the current weather) then just tip a bit extra vinegar into it. I also empty the tank about every 3-4 days.

Try this recipe it was recommended to me although I haven't tried it I no of others that say it works ok.

Dissolve a capful of the Woollies el cheapo brand of Napisan in 1/2 ltr of warm      water - needs a bit of stirring up before it dissolves. Add to the bottom tank,   swirl around a bit and then walk away! There is no need to add anything to the flushing (top) tank but some like to have about 1/2 capful to some warm water.

Soundsjust  like my method.

Also every time I add the mix I also moisten a paper towel with olive oil (any oil will do) & run it around the rubber ring where the top of the waste tank seals to prevent drying and cracking.

Cheers

Jon

hi to all.

I have read all the previews with interest as we are new to the caravaning caper as well.  I have used Thetford chemicals, Bio Magic and currently using bioBlue and all seem to leave you with an odour.  Will try the generic nappy soaker next as it seems that it works well and is cheaper to boot.blankstare

I think to stop some confusion we need to refer to the "nappy soaker" as just that - "Generic Nappy Soaker"!!!! People referring to Nappy San confuse newcomers - it is the amount of sodium percobanate that does the job - and the REAL Nappy San doesn't have the amount that the generic brands have.

Someone told me that the origin of this usage came from a guy who worked at a sewage plant - it is the same product they use - so if it works for the big boys, it will work for us - AND IT DOES!!!!!!!!

it is very unfortunate that some manufacturers have to mislead to hoodwink the consumer into buying their products.Maybe appropriate that everybody has some understanding of the use of most of the toilet cleaners.

Most have Formalderehyde and Bronopol which help to destroy septic's....Formaldehyde is a gas ..is a preservitive formaldehyde is used  commercially in an aqueous solution called  formalin. ...useing these products does more harm to your self and the septic system than useing cheapo Nappy soaker.

I have been using the Woolies Generic Nappy Soaker now for a couple of weeks and it seems to be working fine.  Thanks to all the posters for the advice as it certainly is a money saver.
