I had a look at the Kogan offer when it first came out with the same intent of trying to get a cheap mobile plan but when I read the fine print it uses only part of the Telstra 3G network. They say that the coverage would be 97% of the population whereas Telstra 3G covers 99%. I'm not sure which 2% Kogan miss but they could be the important people you need to talk to or you will need to be closer to a tower.

At first glance it seems a pretty good offer but I believe there are issues with speed when using broadband and drop outs during phone calls. The biggest issue most people seem to be having is setting their phone up with the Kogan sim card. Have a look at the Whirlpool Forum this is one of their most talked about topics on there. I have decided not to risk it at the moment and will probably go with a Telstra plan. Better the devil you know !!!

KOGAN :( we use Telstra because they do have the best coverage we use mobile phones with the blue tick I have a Motorola Atrix and very rarely don't have coverage we also use Skype on our phones and the H or 3G with Telstra is great. In saying that I bought a Kogan TV paid $265 it lasted 13 months and died Kogan didn't want to know about it what a crap product.

Problem with Kogan is that they are internet based and cannot talk to anyone just have to rely on email which they don't always answer, crap company and crap products

Yes, I have the Kogan Sim, used it for a week on trial and took the year @ $299. I haven't made many calls but the internet seems quite good and speed better than my adsl line using the phone as a hotspot. If you look at the coverage for 3g it's quite good. I get service in my home which I don't get with Optus or very little. I had no problem dealing with having the sim sent, activating or extending the service.

Whirlpool has great information, but most of the discontent seemed to be with porting phone numbers and I didn't. I also have Amaysim and they're great, but Optus coverage isn't great still. Hope this helps. I have Kogan TVs and they have been fine. A tablet I bought didn't work and went back in the past.

My initial thoughts were it's $5 to have the trial sim and not much to lose if not happy but 7 days trial was worth that. I think the sim works on any Telstra locked equipment but I haven't tried it so can't be sure. Whirlpool has people who have tried lots of different modems etc.

My Amaysim costs me $10 every 4 months if I buy the voucher in Woolworths, so $2.50 a month to have. Very cheap.  I haven't used Kogan enough to recommend yet but certainly their service in activation etc, has not been a problem for me and would say it was good service.

Thanks Rosie and Janette for your comments, it does seem worth having a go anyway, I agree with Rosie that Amaysim(Optus) is bad out of the North coast main town area and Cap cities in Tassie, I had to go Telstra like everyone else in Tassie and even my home is Telstra only, eager to find an economical and competive  alternative to Telstra, I will look at Whirlpool, good suggestion Janette, I'd forgotten them, thanks again.

I am in the process of sorting out what we will need travelling (hubby retired in Friday!!!!!) so the comments here have been enlightening, to say the least. Absolutely hate the thought of having to go to Telstra because their rates are usurious but perhaps don't have a choice?
