Travelling with a cat

We have started to do the big lap with our unsociable 3 legged 12 year old cat.  She has never travelled before as we are usually only away from home a couple of weeks at a time and friend/family usually take her in as a boarder.  We have been away now for 25 days and to this time she has set foot outside the van 3 time and then ran straight back in.  She seems to travel in the car ok.  We purchassed a pet enclosure before we left but even though it is 3 ft high (and opened topped) she jumps straight out of it.  If anyone else out there travels with their beloved Moggy can you please give us some hints on how to get her out and what type of enclosure you use.

Welcome giaaa1. Hmmm. Sounds like fun. Not sure. We only have to take a dog sometimes. Maybe it will have to be a large cat cage.

I don't travel with a cat, but I have owned a few.

Cats are territorial, and when outside their own territory they are wary, waiting for the owner of it to find them and then fight over it I suppose.

You need to make the cat safe: i.e. give her her own territory- which she seems to have done for herself by claiming the car/van.

If she's happy inside, leave her be.

Hi Giaaa1. Why not try a harness - plenty of people use these for their cats - and take her outside for nature calls or short walks. She may then get used to being outside and be happy to stay in the enclosure. Also, maybe you could put netting over the top of the enclosure.

Thanks all for the replies. e have come across a net that may work. We are currently stationary and she has settle into the surrounds.

When I was at Greens Lake last year there was a large bus and the couple had two cats. They also had a large upright cage that they connected to one of the windows when camped. The whole time they were there one was always outside in the cage and the other never ventured outside at all preferring to stay inside.
With cats it seems they will do what suits them best. As long as you have a dirt box inside for them all should be good.
