Insuring household contents stored in shipping container.

We are in the process of selling our home but as yet have not found a new home to move to. We may end up storing our household goods in a shipping container for up to 12 months. Have any nomads done a similar thing?

Our main concerns are the effect storage has on the stored goods. (Being in central Victoria the temperature fluctuations are quite vast). The other concern is will insurance companies cover items stored for long periods in containers, left in a commercial storage area?

Any input or advice on storage would be appreciated.

Regards Marilyn and Rob.

@thomas21...it depends on lots of things as to whether a container is ok....this includes where it is located (eg fullsun, exposed, coastal, ground level etc), what the prevailing weather is likely to be (eg rainfall, temp extremes) and, of course, specifically what type of things you would intend storing (eg some items may function if they sit idle for too long).

I believe there is a 'quality level' of shipping container called 'furniture grade' (or something similar) which is defined as being water, dust and vermin proof; in that the seals are complete and the doors shut snug and ?....so that's something to consider if you wish to buy one anyway.
