BEWARE; BANK SCAMMERS ARE AT IT AGAIN;

Those space invading oxygen theives are at it again, had a call today from a ?????? claiming to be from the head office of our bank, stating that we had been over charged on fees over recent years & the Dept of fair trading was onto them so fees had to be reimburst.

They had our name, address & how long we had been with this bank & claimed to be able to quote my card no, he quoted the first eight numbers then started to stumble, wanting me to help him.

IF he was from a head office then he would have all our details at hand, little did he know that I have NEVER paid bank fees so where was I over charged.

I reported this to the local bank, they have also heard of another case of the same.

Be ware.

JC.

That's the problem with this technology stuff. For all the good it has done, there are low life scammers out there doing everything they can to separate us from our hard-earned cash. I don't know about you, but I choose who I want to share mine with, and I don't have much to share.
Keep up the good work. They walk among us.

I have noticed that its only since the outsoucing and o/s call centres that this crap is becoming common. Prior to that happening we only had to deal with Nigerians wanting help to offload all their millions via email .

Like all the bad stuf a lot was our own doing as with pays going straight into banks rather than to you and then you decide which bank.... they really tried to help you those days. Now they charge to control your money. Not all advances are for the greater good

We have fun with them, string them along, quoting false figures and being confused and letting them explain it all in detail then asking them to go over it all again and finally telling them your with the bank of Egypt, they hang up very quickly.  We just wonder who pays for the call especially if you've kept them on the line for 5 minutes.

Cheers

I tend to string em along a bit too. Last one I got was from "The Australian Govt department of reclaims" offering me a refund of overpaid income tax. I was still working for the ATO at the time, so after playing with em a bit I suggested they call me on my extension number at the ATO the following day so I could check the ATO computer system to track down the reason for the errors. Not surprisingly the line went dead!
My son just offers to go get the "boss" and then puts the phone down, picking up every 5minutes or so to let them know the boss "will be with you shortly". They must run up some phone bills

PS
always assume that something for nothing will be a scam and you won't be one of those caught out

Scamwatch, Stay Smart Online, bank websites and others are constantly warning of these scams and it doesn't hurt to post reminders such as this one from time to time here. The ATO scam gets regular mention too.

If there is some irregularity in your bank account the bank will contact you in writing.

In short, don't give any personal information over the phone to anyone unless you've initiated the call yourself. While this seems like common sense some of these callers can be quite persuasive according to the experts in these things.

I have caller identification on my home phone and I don't answer calls from overseas or private numbers. Overseas and private number callers that I know have my email and mobile number.

After returning from a trip overseas a few months back, my wife received a phone call from our bank asking if she had used her Mastercard in a small European country within the last 24 hours, of course she answered in the negative.

Seems someone had aquired her credit card details and bought a few bits and pieces, only amounted to a couple of hundred dollars.

The bank immediately cancelled the card and reversed the transactions, we both recieved new cards in the mail within a few days.

Great service, they were right on the ball and we were not one cent out of pocket.

We bank with the NAB, have done for over 30 years and will continue to do so.

No I don't have NAB shares nor does any member of my family work for them, just a satisfied customer.biggrin
