Well folks, after lurking on this forum for the past 12 months or so and gaining a great deal of info, thanks everyone, we are almost ready to hit the road! House and furniture sold and have got rid of 40 years worth of stuff!! very stressful last 6 months but it has been worth it. Hubby and I have finally retired and he is waiting to get his pension. Just a few things to finish off in the van and Landcruiser and we will set off by the end of January, I can't believe all this planning and now we are nearly there.... Hope to meet some of you wonderful people on the road. First destination, (weather permitting) will be East Gipplsand, a little place called Walhalla, hubby is gold prospector and wants to travel to places he can do some prospecting, after that we will decide where to go from there, we have the rest of our lives to see this great country and we want to see as much as we can while we are still fit and healthy..
Good luck and many, many happy travels to you both, I agree with Dougwe, good first choice, I have been to Walhalla 3-4 times it's great. watch the road going in, as it is very very tight in some places when towing a larger rig, especially if you meet on-coming traffic on the curves, Rgs Dazren
One of my fav places I live not far from there. It's worth noteing that you will have to go to the very end of the town to turn around with a van attached.
Also well worth doing the steam train, lots of fun a a great way to see the country. :)
Have great memories of Walhalla - used to camp there (in the days of "the tent") - good times with the kids - don't know if the mine is still open to see or not - but worth a look, as is the old cemetary up the hill behind town - how some of the graves haven't slid down the hill is a wonder!!!
Enjoy the prospecting - don't miss going to the Golden Triangle - especially Wedderburn etc - well worth a good walk.

Yeah especially ballarat, on the news todaoy a Amatuer prospector found a nugget near ballarat, with his detector, I thought they said it was over 5 KG but then said it was worth $300.000 So i don't know exactly, but it was big anyway
Thanks everyone for the info, where would be a good place to stay? As I said earlier (weather permitting), will be keeping an eye on the bush fires. Yes, I have just been reading about that gold nugget, so hope for us yet! Looking forward to getting out there...
