I guess everyone has seen the media coverage of the so-called racial problems in Woodridge.
For those who may not know, Woodridge is a suburb of Logan in SEQ, which is where I live..Logan, that is, not Woodridge. I grew up here before Logan was ever a city, so I know Woodridge's history very well. I suspect the problems are no worse than they've always been, it's just that this kind of thing gets more media attention than in years gone by.
Anyway, someone brought this article in the Brisbane Times to my attention, so I thought I'd share it.
Strange thing beth, I was only thinking when I saw that on the news before, I thought that was near you, don't venture too far from home in that direction and keep safe.

I generally stay on my side of the highway Doug, but I do actually have to go to 'Logan Central' tomorrow. They renamed the business centre several years ago, maybe to try and make it sound better, but it's all still Woodridge to me. Anyway, my test is nowhere near that problem street. So I'm not expecting any problems.
I live on the eastern side of the highway...it's a standing joke around here...this is the 'better' side.
That's true troopy. The fighting that I remember from the '60's was between Inala and Woodridge.
These days it seems to be different cultures within Woodridge itself, while Inala doesn't seem so multi cultural. There's a mainly Asian culture there these days.
Howdyeeeeee all u Nutters out there, Woodridge,!!!!!! I have met some of the nicest people from there , made some life long friends from there . Over 163 (odd) Nationality live there ,and r trying to get along togeather,two things will make it work , (1) there need to have a sense of humour, (2) the ability to laugh at them selfs.... I spent 20 years living in Woodridge, in Bruce St ,, two steets away from the problem,,,,,,,,,,Billeeeeeeeeeee

Hi All We have lived in Logan City ( Crestmead) for 30 yrs now and have never had any problems . There will always be tension where different cultures meet but what I would like to see is all these people get their act together , after all they chose to live here so adopt our way of life ,( which is not rioting in the streets because of a disagreement with a neighbour ) if not find somewhere else to live Cheers
I did a two year stint at 38 station Woodridge. It was the most interesting two years out of a 38 years & 10 month career. I transferred to Brisbane 3 months before the new station was opened. I worked the old station, we called it "The Bronx". Our cars were locked in a cyclone wire cage, topped with barbed wire! I believe that the new station has the same arrangement. When we turned out after dark, one crew member stood at the bay doors until they closed, then alighted the pumper. I ended my career at 31 station Burpengary Nth Brisbane. Woodridge made Caboolture look like a kindy!
Thanks for that leevin, that's interesting. I hope you weren't the one who had to come and put out a grass fire at my place many years ago. I'd lit a small patch of dried grass at the back of our block, and it went wooshka! I didn't expect it to flare up so high. I was very sheepish when the fire truck turned up. My only excuse is that I was very young.
My brother actually works for Logan Council, and his position entails a lot of contact with the public, often abusive. He handles it all very well.

You must be in one of the 'better' areas of Crestmead chrisnchris. And of course, there are better areas of Woodridge and Kingston too. I lived in Crestmead for awhile, several years ago, across the road from a park. There was often trouble there at night.
I agree, there will always be tension in such a multi cultural area, but hopefully the planned meeting in Feb with Mayor Pam Parker and Premier Cambell Newman can get something done, but I'm not holding my breath. Actually, at the time, my thought was stick the fire hoses on the lot of them! Cool them off!
