Battery storage

I need to move some batteries around to make space for more. To do this I need to stack a couple of batteries to use vertical space that is wasted. These are sealed batteries and I was wondering if I could seperate them top from bottom by using a block of timber to ensure that there is no contact of teh terminals to the top battery? Is this feasable? Of course they will need to be properly secured but that is something I can fix easily. This would probably be a temporary measure, a month or two as I get things better sorted in my mind how to best use available space? After that If they need to be stacked still I will build a proper frame.

Look forward to any advise.

What type of "sealed battery" are they?
Eg,... Wet cells, AGMs, ....????

If they are AGMs you can lay them on their side with something between them. Make sure that they are properly secured and have fuses fitted on the cables close to the batteries.

If they are wet cells, I would be vary wary of doing anything and would not stack them on top of each other unless on a very strong shelf system.

Cheera,
Peter

Peter,

Thanks for that. They are actually a marine battery, wet cell but with one of those small, round windows in the top to inspect the water level. They are flat topped and have no access to the inside. The shelf will be strong enough, it is steel resting on 4mm angle iron and it has held 4 big batteries for a while and this will only increase weight a small amount.

By shelf system, I mean 2 shelves, one for each battery, not one battery on top of the other.

Cheers,
Peter

Welcome Trotsky from me, enjoy here and out in the playground. I see no reason they wouldn't be ok on a good shelf system just make sure they are vented to outside.
