We have a 2009 Sterling with a slide out bed and have had no problem at all with water leaking into the van.

On xmas eve we were hit by a massive storm on the slide out side of the van and not a drop of water came inside.

We have a 2011 3ltr turbo diesel Colarado which has towed our van around Oz without a single problem.

hi there handycapped and welcome im a newbie as well my freind has a sterling with the slide out bedroom and his feed back is he dont like it as the cover flap that stops the rain also flaps in the wind and as it is above your head keeps you awake, good luck

I have a 2006 Jayco with a slideout - yes it did leak once BUT it is because the clamp to hold it when driving had dug a hole in the top of the slideout - I had not put it in straight. Found a bottle lof liquid metal and patched the hole - no more problems.
In saying that I am getting new rubber seal fitted as it has pulled away in a couple of spots at the top and bottom - the metal inside the strip is rusted.

Jayco tell me that it is essentail to spray the rubber with a silicon spray to keep it in good condition and soft so it moves in and out properly with the slideout.

I too am new to the forum. I can't comment on Jayco, but we have had slide outs on our two caravans and neither have leaked. The older style will let water in if you close it up without drying it, but the newer ones have blades similar to wiper blades to wipe it as it closes. if you happen to have the older style, it is still relatively easy to wipe it down with an old towel. (or wipe up the water that gets on the floor). 9 times out of 10 you will be closing it in dry weather, but you need to know the worst case scenario!

We are going to install slide outs on our bus conversion too with confidence! Personally, I don't think I could go back to a RV without a slideout, It would be like going back to a black and white television... It's is do-able, but why would ?

Thanks robbiebago. We purchased caravan with slide out and brought it down from Qld in torrential rain. Slide out didn't leak but big side front window blew out just south of Toowoomba. Had to get it to Moruya (south coast) with piece of plastic sticky taped to outside to keep the rain out. Leaky slide out least of our problems. It is now safely ensconced with repairer in Moruya awaiting new window. I agree about slide outs - give a heap more room, mind there is already a lot of room in a 25'9" caravan.
